    Barntown school gets green light

    Wexford People - Wednesday January 26 2011

A TWENTY-YEAR wait is over for Barntown campaigners who have spent two decades trying to secure a new primary school.

With nine prefabs currently being utilised at the 287 pupil school, the announcement of a new school for Barntown is long overdue according to teaching staff, who have campaigned relentlessly to have facilities upgraded.

The green light for a new Scoil Mhuire was given on Monday by the Tanaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan under the Department's school building programme for 2011.

Under the plan Barntown can now proceed to formulate briefs and appoint a design team.

' We really welcome the announcement. We have been looking for a new school since the early 1990s,' said school principal Louisa O'Brien.

Scoil Mhuire in Barntown currently has 16 teachers and four special needs assistants.

A number of other schools in County Wexford were also included in the Departments School building works programme.

Extensions and refurbishments at both St. Aidan's Parish School in Enniscorthy is set to progress to secure planning permissions with a view to preparing tender documents in 2011/2012.

The extension of Scoil Naomh Phadraig in Crossabeg is expected to tender this year, while a temporary new second level school for Gorey is at tender stage. Work on a new school at Enniscorthy Vocational College is progressing.

New Loreto to be built according to this -

    Tuesday, 13 March 2012

    Dear parents, guardians and students,

I write on behalf of the Board of Management to inform you of a most significant development in relation to the school’s building programme.

I am delighted to be able to confirm that our school has been included on the Department of Education and Skills’ list of schools to go to construction in 2015/2016. Whilst the list currently states that the development will be an extension, negotiations with the Department in the coming months will be centred on the Loreto trustees’ and Board of Management’s strong preference for a new school on a 10 acre greenfield site at Pembroke Hill, Wexford.

The Board of Management has been working on this building project since 1998. There have been many difficult days and false dawns in that 14 year period. With a definite date for construction, guaranteed funding under the government’s capital programme and an attractive greenfield site option, the Board feels that Loreto is, at last, well-positioned to finally secure a building that will properly serve the needs of students and staff.

The Board wishes to place on record its very deep appreciation of the considerable support for this project being received from the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin T.D. and Councillor George Lawlor.

Loreto, Wexford celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2016. Our vision is to do justice to that important celebration in a building that will honour our proud past and be the centre for a bright future as we play our part in meeting the educational needs of the town and county for generations to come.

I shall keep you informed of significant developments in relation to this major announcement as they occur.

    Yours sincerely,

    Billy O’ Shea,
Principal and Secretary to Board of Management.
