Tried to get some photos of it crossing Dublin, no lightning but the cloud looked nasty on the northside!

I saw the best bolt lightning strikes today between portlaoise and mountmellick than I have seen in years. An amazing display!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,145 ✭✭✭nilhg

Yeah, saw more lightning today here at home than in the last 20 years, made a dash home for the camera but only got a few minutes before the hailstones hit, didn't manage to capture a lightning strike despite shooting about 200 similar images.

Saw a picture on Twitter of a cloud near Straffan yesterday whereby the poster described it as spinning clouds. Just a pity it wasn't a video.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,259 ✭✭✭highdef

I saw something very similar too and I have video. It's in the pictures thread. It's in a full day timelapse so is very sped up but I will post up a standard speed video of the storm this evening. Best viewed in HD

what an explosive day yesterday was, ..

Just heard some local reports of lighting strikes to several houses in the Loughmore area of mid-Tipperary yesterday, farm buildings and a few chimneys knocked and the wiring burnt out of one house!

In the clouds I posted pictures of above you could see horizontal rotation in the bottom of the cloud (ie parallel to the ground), that was what seemed to be causing the distinctive bars along the bottom.

    Looking at yesterday's rainfall totals

    http://www.met.ie/latest/yesterday.asp

I am a little surprised to see that Casement only recorded 1.9mm for the entire day, especially given intensity of the showers in the region. Really shows how fickle and localised showers can be despite there apparent numeracy on radar returns. In the wider local area close to Casement 4.2mm was recorded at Phoenix Park, 8.2mm at Dub Airport and 12.1mm at Dunsany.

PS, more heavy rain for the south and east on Thursday?

    204082.gif

Only the ECMWF and HIRLAM suites showing this potential with the UKMO/NAE and GFS keeping the bulk of the rain to the south and east of the country. Something to keep an eye on maybe.

PHOtos photos photos!!... lovely hook on it on radar! Wish i was there!

Ask and you shall receive! ;) I only just got around to cropping these down to size so apologies for the delay in posting these. Also, sorry for the poor quality, my camera is rubbish and it has a tendancy to make some of the pictures look a lot brighter than the sky actually was (it was seriously dark!). It's also very hard to get good shots here with the way the houses are laid out and with the trees around and everything. I had to take most of the pictures from out of the bedroom, landing and bathroom windows to get high enough for clear shots. Hopefully, though, they should still give you a fairly good idea of what was passing by Portlaoise yesterday.

These first five were of the storm that was to the north and northwest roughly of Portlaoise around 6.30 to sometime after 7.00 pm. Lots of long, rolling rumbles of thunder from this.

Pictures 06, 07 and 08 are looking towards the south. The showers and storms were coming from this direction and passing mainly just to the west of here and then on north (picture 09) and northeastwards.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Later on another one passed by just to the west, continued north and northeastwards. There wasn't any thunder or lightning here from this one that I could tell but I think this may be the one that others reported here that went on to affect them a bit later on yesterday evening.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

    More.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

    Few more.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Last couple. Reckon that should be enough pictures for you all! ;):D

I did try recording a video but the microphone on the camera barely picked up the rumbles of thunder, despite them being quite loud. The sound of the birds chirping in the background and the raindrops seemed to drown out the thunder unfortunately so I won't bother uploading that, it's not worth it.

Just heard that on AA Roadwatch (re heavy rain and bad road conditions on the N11). Very slow moving shower just clipped here an hour or so ago. Not going anywhere too quickly!
