You base your weather facts on what you see on the news? Ireland and the UK have one of the highest number of tornadoes per square mile in the world.
Not one of them shows a tornado.

Ah, you're a troll. Never mind.

There was a small tornado in Clonee back in 2005 iirc.

Eh no... you gave me 3 links to funnel clouds and a waterspout, no tornados. That sq mile thing is pure ****e.

Deluge in Greystones at the moment 8.55pm. Haven't heard any thunder, but wouldn't be surprised if it's about.

Have a look at the sat 24 animation. You can see a cell explode up through the low cloud deck over Kildare.

    42.2mm so far - what a day!

Some thunder & lightning around 12, then biblical rain.

Said this once already this summer & hopefully never again "never saw rain like this in Ireland"

At one point (about 12.45) station reported 190mm/h

Very localised - love the weather:)

Very surprised there was very little lightning today despite the intensity of the downpours.
The Cell that hit the Naas area had a 288m/hr rate, which ive never seen before

It was a lovely morning until this lot arrived over Avoca at precisely 12.45

Johnstown Castle, bastion of the "Sunny South East" has reported more or less all its 'average' August Rainfall already, about 70mm to date.

    http://www.ogimet.com/cgi-bin/gsynres?lang=en&ind=03956&ndays=30&ano=2012&mes=08&day=06&hora=06&ord=REV&Send=Send

This is based on Rosslare having a crude 75mm long term august average prior to relocation and Johnstown being just a bit inland of that location and missing out on summer sea fogs. (There is no published full 30 year average for Johnstown Castle although there should be for rainfall as it has been a climatology station for 100 years)

Malin Head was not even at 10% although Belmullet is near enough 50% as is Valentia.

You can roughly work out what an monthly average rainfall total is at any station from figures in the met eireann bulletins Sponge. For example, in the August 2011 bulletin http://www.met.ie/climate/monthlyBulletins/aug11.pdf, Johnstown's monthly total was recorded as being 32.8mm, which was shown as being 39% of its (1961-90) average total. To work out actual average total from this you can multiply the actual total by 100 then divide by percentage total: EG:

    Total = 32.8*100 = 328 / (monthly percentage)39 = 84.1

84.1mm is roughly the mean August total at Johnstown.

To get an even more rough idea of what the 5 day % of normal total is for Johnstown this month so far. Just divided the average total by number of days in the month I.E 31 to get an idea of the average daily total.

    84.1 / 31 = 2.7

2.7mm is the rough daily average total for Johnstown in August.

Then, multiply this by the number of days in the month so far:

    2.7*5 = 13.6

13.6mm is roughly what the mean total is at the station for the first 5 days of August.

THEN! (I am going on I know! :p) multiply the 5 day total at the station for this year by 100, which in this case is 60.5mm, and divide this by the 5 day average, 13.6mm, to get an idea of how the 5 day actual total stands in relation to its 5 day average total in terms of percentage:

    60.5*100/13.6 = 446

446% is the approximate % of normal figure for Johnstown Castle's total for the month so far.

Looks like theres a chance of a severe thunderstorm breaking out this afternoon along the west coast.

LI -3 and -4 in localised areas too. Cape near 1000j along with some decent DLS of 14-16 m/s ( this helps storms organise better ) .

Just waiting for the 6z Hi res to come through now...

EDIT : Just been some strikes already out off the west coast. http://www.sat24.com/gb?ir=False ( click settings on the bottom right and turn on lightning)
