If it is an outfit then fine, wear what you want. But if it's what they are wearing to bed, then I think it's unhygenic. To wake and not get dressed before you go to a public area, implies that you haven't washed, you are lazy, and you have no self respect. Having said that, it's doesn't bother me as I don't live in an area where it happens, but I, like everyone else on the tread, am entitled to share my opinion.

Surely it's about putting your best foot forward? And I'm not talking designer clothes and immaculate makeup. I'm talking about showing people you have a bit of pride in how you look (and smell) and to show people that you aren't so lazy that you rolled out of bed and into the car. I liken PJ wearers to people who don't put on clean clothes and who have no pride in their apperance. No matter how clean a pair of pyjama bottoms is, you will always look like you are a lazy sod who can't even be bothered getting dressed.

I have to say, i live on a road with one school and two creches and all the yummy mummy type seem to be drop their kids off in their PJ's and many of them seem to pick them up in their PJ's later on in the day.

PJ's and those Ugg boots seem to be a big combo!! Strangely enough these ladies will have taken the time to apply make up and do their hair and stuff.

I have seen mammys at the school gates hiding in their cars in their PJs because they didn't have time to get dressed before the school run which I am more sympathetic about :p - but they drop and then go home and get dressed and would be mortified if they had to get out of the car.

I haven't see the yummy mummy types but can only assume they do it because they are sheep trying to retain their youth

Not really, i just think it's kind of acceptable within their circle and it gives the odd implication of "being busy", which seems to be very important to some people.

A lot of it in Dún Laoghaire. Bonus points for stains (front and back), 'spider legs' sticking out, or a cesarian scar with a moustache.

I live in a council estate, and yes, there are a few who pop to the local Spar in their pyjamas, dressing gowns and uggs during the day.

Don't think any of them actually go any further afield in them though or if they do, I haven't seen it.

I live in tallaght and they're everywhere, it's like some plague of the walking dead undressed. It turns my stomach, how anyone lets their kids out dressed like that is beyond me.
And it's not just teenage girls. I actually saw a woman in her 50's, christmas eve before last, doing her grocery shopping in the square, dressed in pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers! That's just a lazy old hag if you ask me:mad:

Lets cut th BS, bottom line is wearing PJs in public is something prodominently done by scumbags and NO ONE likes scumbags.

People can harp on about sociological , hygine and decorum reasons but at the end of the day it boils down to the fact that this is a notible feature of scumbag lifestyles and no one likes them.

PJs are indoor wear, wearing them outside makes you look as stupid as wearing any other clothing designed for one purpose in a situation not fit for them. Turn up to tescos in a wet suit or Alid in full GAA gear and you'd look equally as ridiculous all be it slightly more ecentric rather than slovenly.

    Scumbags = sh1theads,

PJs outside and tracksuit pants tucked into socks = sh1thead uniform.

Of course its logical, do you need to spelled out for you?

Look at why its acceptable in their circle... because you dont have anything important to do for the day... because your idle... because your lazy.

There are many signs that we've lost the run of ourselves in this country pj's on the streets is only one of them . Time to restrict Democracy to those mature enough to understand good taste .Many voters do not .

Well I wouldn't wear a mini skirt if someone could see my thong either.

But the main difference between PJs and any other clothing is the fact that PJs have the inference that they have been worn to sleep in the night before and that the person hasn't washed, changed their underwear or sleepwear since getting up that morning.
And that's not a superiority thing or judgement. They are PYJAMAS. It's what they were made for, it's the logical conclusion.
And why anyone would want someone thinking they are one of the great unwashed is beyond me...........

thankfully not everybody thinks like that tho. Just because somebody doesn't conform to your way of thinking does not make them any lesser than you. You can infer what you like but remember its only in your own mind. You cannot read other people's mind.

    Glass houses and such.

But that's like saying I'm wrong for thinking a cup is for drinking from or a fork is for eating with. Pyjamas are for sleeping in. It's why they were made and it's their purpose. I've never said anyone was lesser than me. Just that I can't understand why people would want to give off the impression that they didn't get dressed or wash that day before leaving the house.

Not where I live, often served them when i worked in Dublin though, generally 18 or over, never 13. I served one a while ago who took it a step further, wasn't wearing pyjamas but a short white dressing gown, and nothing else complete with a very deep tan, over the top hair extensions, makeup jewellery and nails. Ridiculous.

    What was he buying? :D

If someone looks like they don't take care of themselves, how is it my fault for assuming that they don't take care of themselves? I have only their presentation of themselves to go on.

well you can drink from any utensil that hold's liquid. It doesn't necessarily have to be a cup. Likewise you can eat with any utensil - doesn't have to be a fork. Do you ONLY drink from a cup and eat from a fork? ;)

Also, I sure hope you don't own a pair of denim jeans - you know they are for miners only.

And bikini's are for swimming but i bet you wouldnt complain if you saw a nice girl wearing a bikini top on a hot day in town.

Pj's are not entirely for sleeping in, thats just your opinion. The actual definition is:

Pajamas, also spelled pyjamas and often shortened to PJs, can refer to several related types of clothing. The original paijama are loose, lightweight trousers fitted with drawstring waistbands and worn in South and West Asia by both sexes.[1] In many English-speaking nations, pajamas are loose-fitting, two-piece garments derived from the original garment and worn chiefly for sleeping,[2] but sometimes also for lounging,[3] also by both sexes.[4] More generally, pajamas may refer to several garments, for both daywear and nightwear, derived from traditional pajamas and involving variations of style and material.

How about a fat 70-year old? How about a fat 70-year old man? We are back to social convention here - even if it doesn't bother everybody, it's going to bother some of them. Like farting loudly in a restaurant.

everyone is entitled to an "opinion" but that doesn't mean that your "opinion" is correct. to actually think that you can "tell" who a person is, what they do, and how much they "offend" because they wear a certain type of clothes your own opinion and yours only. To actually insult somebody because they choose to wear clothes different to your own is actually a very shallow way of putting someone down to make yourself feel good. Someone that you don't even know.

Why should somebody else's clothing have such an effect on you? only you can answer that. Does their shoes upset you too, maybe their hairstyles - what about the "just out of bed hairstyle look" that people spend a fortune to get. How dare they - that style should only be worn getting out of bed.

do YOU own a pair of Jeans?? Is it okay for you to wear them. Do you know the history of jeans - why aren't you up in arms over this.

The only thing I find disgusting are some of the comments on here. One of the girls was 15, never knew her dad, lost her mum to drug addiction and illness. I'm not presuming to know every poster's circumstances, but I'm guessing most of ye weren't orphaned at a young age or had to deal with a junkie parent. 'Dole scum', 'knackers', 'lazy slob', 'scroungers' etc. Aren't you all just marvelous with your parents with jobs and stable upbringings? We're all products of our environment. Spilling bile about 15 year old children who aren't as privileged as yourself shows a remarkable lack of empathy. They might find it difficult to escape (or even imagine escape) from the welfare trap, but these are kids, they were born into these circumstances, they didn't ask for it and can't be blamed for it.

What part of that removed her ability to wear trousers?

this thread seems to be getting shallower and shallower.

a 70 year old person is just as entitled to wear whatever they want, as a person quarter, half or a third their age. Fat, skinny, tall, short can wear what they want - they are not harming anybody by their clothes. If you are insulted by that, then you are the one with the problem.

It's disgusting. They don't have any self respect let alone respect for anyone else. I watched that programme last night and it depressed me. What I saw was an elderly woman who had failed as a parent with her own children and she is clearly not able to cope with her granddaughter. There seems to be a clear lack of discipline and kids need boundaries.

The girls in the programme had been expelled from school and seemed to spend most of their time roaming about on buses and hanging around outside shops. There was a noticeable lack of fathers and in fact one of the girls commented that some random guy claimed he might even be her father.

We are witnessing a generation of poorly educated tramps, descended from a line of poorly educated tramps. It won't be long before they're pregnant, living in their own council flats and dragging up the next generation of poorly educated tramps. Well done the welfare state.

You can't tell, but you have a very good clue. Same as if you see someone dressed as an emo. People give out signals - are you denying this?

In addition, I've never insulted someone for wearing pyjamas outdoors - that would fly in the face of good manners, wouldn't it?

It doesn't affect me beyond my perception of them and what it tells me about their attitude to themselves and others. That is what we are discussing here.

Nowhere in that passage do we see they are for going to the grocery store in.

We know there are different types but the ones we are referring to are the manc, dirty, smelly ones you come across in the local store, and their pjs aren't much better.

Ok, so now you are telling me that you would be happy to be sitting in a restaurant with your g/f and around you there are people sitting in pyjamas and elderly men wearing bikinis, farting loudly and picking their noses and eating what they find. How about if some of them are talking loudly on their cellphones? And maybe one or two are playing music that you don't like loudly on their phones? And a guy at the table beside you keeps spitting on the floor.

Lots of bad mannered stuff. You are still having a good time, yes?

Normal folk is it? Like you? Great first post welcome to boards! What our country has become is our state broadcaster has the likes of you more worried about what the neighbour is wearing than how europe/government/bankers are actually sticking it in your a** while you worry about pj's.

Id hate to be your bf/gf.. Out to dinner and all you do is look around for people who dont conform to your high standards.. I bet your missus is afraid to come downstairs with her pj's on.

They arent HIS standards they are the standards of the majorty of the population. Its generally given that its poor manors to pick your nose , fart and wear inapropriate attire etc in view of others.

Its called COMMON decency for a reason.
