Reviews are out on tweaktown, looks better than 7970, nipping at the 6990 and cheaper than the 7970 by $50. I smell a price war :D

well no one is selling it...

Is there a 660 on the books for release soon, does anyone know?

I was looking for info too, the only thing I could find was "Q2\Q3 2012"

    e.g. here

but I'm sceptical of any sites now, they just seem to be making **** up when it comes to the 600 series... plus the fact that nvidia changed the goal posts on what'll be what (e.g. reports that the current 680 was going to be the 660 or 670). I'm waiting to see if there'll be a 660Ti and that's what I'll probably go for. I say that now, but i doubt it'll take much to push me to get a 670 hopefully

just read that thing on tweaktown. It looks alright, but if ATI will drop price on 7970 i might aswell get 7970 with some third party cooler instead.

7970 has still better ways with power managment and is a stronger player when it comes to multy gpu setups. 680 still manages to take **** loads of power!

i really want to see pricing for this and more reviews. i really dont think that reference design is even that good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,493 ✭✭✭M00lers

I'd be interested in the GTX680 when the non-reference coolers from the likes of MSI and Gigabyte come out.

Something similar to the Gigabyte GTX580 SOC with the WindForce cooler and I'd be very tempted.

EDIT: BTW, where are all the reviews etc. I thought the NDA was up today?

    Well, ****!

Edit: @moolers, it is, but not until NVIDIA has presented it, which is due to happen at 5pm GMT.

that looks good, but HWVS has a habit of raising the price when stuff comes into stock.

if other reviews agree with tweaktown, I might sell my 6990 and 'side grade' to a 680. runs cooler, quieter, more future proof, and wc blocks should be cheaper I imagine.

    TL;DR
    10-15% better than 7970 @ 1920x1080
    Same performance as 7970 @ 2560x1600
    Slightly lower power consumption
    Cheaper (for now)

Looks like NVidia are on to a winner.

Drivers really show in those benchmarks. The 680 looses by up to 10% to the 7970 In Crysis Warhead and Metro 2033. Yet in a high-profile, popular game like BF3, it beats it by almost 36%.

For reference, HWVS has a Palit (I think) 680 in stock for €499. So yeah, looks like prices might jump around a bit at first.

both reviews in conclusion say that it beats 7970 very badly, but when you see benchmarks it is not so true. the bf3 gives a big leap for nvidia, but i just think that dice and nvidia worked more together to optimise it for BF3. It is nicely power efficient too, but there is a catch.

    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_680/32.html

you cant overclock it so easy like any older cards and ati 7970. that automatic OCing is very hard to go around. so its not that easy to have a hard OC on this card and you are prety much stuck on stock clocks with reference cards. will be interesting to see what will come out from other companies...

still, lets see what ATI will do with its prices.

edit scan.co.uk has it too now:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/gpu-nvidia/geforce-gtx-680-pci-e

    same prices as 7970

You gotta love a bit of competition. Hopefully, we see a price drop from AMD.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I'd imagine there'll be updated versions of Afterburner or whatever to make OCing a bit easier. Too early to tell at the moment, IMO.

    Price wars, ahoy!

yup, price wars! i would imagine ATI would have droped prices today too... when could we see price drops?

and then another thing: where to get best deal for 680? :D i might go for it!

    scatter-value-99th.gif
"The GTX 680's few instances of higher frame latencies, such as that apparent GPU Boost issue in Arkham City, move it just a couple of ticks below the Radeon HD 7970 in overall performance. Then again, the GTX 680 costs $50 less, so it's still a comparable value. The truth is that, either way you look at it, there is very little performance difference between these two cards, and any difference is probably imperceptible to the average person."
    Sauce
When equally priced, 7970 is a winner methinks.

TTL, i am off watching it myself lads!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭Serephucus

    lol780lol

I'm probably going to wait, TBH. I won't have funds to (comfortably) buy a 680 until around the Summer anyway, so I'm thinking my next update will be an i5 3570/780.

you are on 580, so there is no point at all i guess. i am quite tempted though to get replacement for 570.
TTL made a great point, that there is feck all between 7970 and 680, but fanboys ofc will find what to fight for. so do i just get in now or wait and see how well price cut on 7970

so far only scan.co.uk has them in stock lads. anyone found anywhere else? or maybe 7970 price cut?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,374 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

Scan have them for 425 for an MSI one.

Question, are these compatible with PCI-E 2.0?

Saweet, now i can buy one and then wait for the sandybridge to come down in price

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Griffin87

Im going to wait for Msi Twin Frozr or the Asus Dcu2 version.

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Well lads, I will sleep on it amd see how I feel about it tommorow.

    Reasons:

hype was not even near real product. It's not even properly faster then 7970, it's 7970 with nvidia logo. Power consuption and noise does not even bother me.
Then I want to see how will price war pan out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,374 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

Be interesting to hang on a month or two and see how the price war is coming along, its been a while since we had a proper AMD/Nvidia price war.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Don't take TTL's review too seriously. If you look at most of the benchmarks out there, there are marked differences between the two cards. Some in NVIDIA's favour, some in AMD's. What you also have to keep in mind is driver maturity. NVIDIA has got quite a name for itself being able to bring about huge performance increases from drivers alone (45% increase in Skyrim, anyone?).

Honestly, unless there's a game that you really want to max out, and your 570 struggles with, I'd just stick with it. It's a great card, and if you overclock it you can get damn close to 580 numbers.

you are dead right there on 570. i am maxing out everything, its just i still got that money i want to spend on something, if not, i will just damn waste it little by little on bull****.

TTL is right on tha card, and not that he said its bad card, in fact he said it is great, its just hype was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of proportions.

****... maybe i just get g27 steering wheel instead, always wanted it...

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Well actually, the hype wasn't out of proportion at all, it's just that the hype was for the GK110 780. ;)

Tell ya what: Buy two more monitors, so that you're prepped when you upgrade to a 780 like me! :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

    Yeah,

Nvidia tend wipe the floor with AMD when it comes to driver optimisation & up to date profiles. Thats what will makr the 680 easier to live with.

Has there been any 7970 Xfire vs. 680 SLI, surround vs. eyefinity comparisons? Thats what I'm keen to see.

    Anyone after a pair of 7970's? :D
