In all fairness, a list like this isn't just out to cater for your own personal music taste. What's essential listening for some is painful for others. It's called diversity!

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era :D

    111 - Bell X1 - Flock

And.... 101. The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash

Surprised we got to 101 without mentioning this!

Here, Technocentral, don't you have to eat a hat or something now? :pac:

    Nope he's safe.

Also i love how albums on the cover of the book never made it into this thread.

    Some truly shocking picks!

I'm not taking the piss. But I'm surprised Mary Black didn;t get a nod.

As I said about 15 posts back, this is just a list of 101 (now more) Irish albums, not 101 essential ones, 30 would have a more realistic number. My hat remains uneaten, I'll be wearing it to a festival or two this summer :D

    Pfft... define 'essential' so!

Em, as in the name of the book "101 Irish Records (You Must Hear Before You Die)."

Not wanting to start an argument but I wouldn't put The Pogues in here . Theres obviously a huge Irish influence but originated in London with English born and bred members mostly.

If we count the Pogues can we count Aphex Twin?

Dunno why I said 'pfft...' in my post, I just likes me a good spectacle of hat-eating.

Trawling through that list I can see what you mean, obviously some crackers in there but a few duds also.

got this as a gift the other day and was having a glance through it...
some absolute gems in there (well for me anyway).
And something we should all be proud of as a nation.

One thing I did notice is the perceived lack of modern dance\electronic music albums??
Not sure if this was simply the authors preffered taste, but I defintely think there should have been more to add balance.

    examples off hand...

Japanese Popstars - Controlling Your Allegiance
    Kormac - WordPlay
David Holmes - Let's get Killed

I'm surprised that Messiah J and The Expert weren't mentioned, and The Corrs were :pac:.

I sort of feel like this is a list of ALL the Irish albums, rather than the best ones, but I'll give it a go:

    117. Relish - Wildflowers (at least the first 5 songs)

  • Registered Users Posts: 333 ✭✭Prettyblack

    118. U2 - Pop

  • Registered Users Posts: 333 ✭✭Prettyblack

MBV isn't really Irish though is it? Two of them were Irish... it was recorded in the UK... on a UK label... they were based in London... etc.

Haven't seen this one mentioned even though it's on the cover:

    119. Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion - Fight Like Apes

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,328 ✭✭✭karaokeman

    This thread has lost its purpose, but anyways;

    120. Jimmy MacCarthy - The Song of The Singing Horseman

The (****) corrs, the (pathetic) fight like apes & the (contrived) cast of cheers get a mention, but no Horslips or Republic of loose? Shame on you all.
