Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Last year he overcame cancer in a matter of weeks to lift the CL in Wembley in May. Lets hope he can do the exact same this year. Amazing character, and one of the most solid defenders in the world over the past few seasons.

hopefully he'll come back again. A true great moment last year watching him lift the trophy

Is it a relapse or just a precaution?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

It's either 1 year out, or he'll never play again. As much as it pains me to say it, I think he should retire

Not to be funny, but a liver transplant would never be a precaution, it would always be a last resort, there isn't really enough of the things available for it to be precautionary. If the surgery is being carried out quickly, he has been bumped up the waiting list, and for that to happen it would have to be pretty serious.

Just goes to show, you can be the fittest, richest most succesful guy around, but that nasty C doesn't care one iota.

I hope for Abidals sake that this is the end of his problems in this regard. If it means he has to retire, so be it. He will be a huge loss to Barcelona, but would be an ever bigger loss to his family.

Having seen it first hand, it really really is vicious.

The doctor in the article, is basically saying, Abidal should have perfectly normal life within a year, if all goes well, the main worry is blood clots which could cause stroke or Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot travling into the lung).
However, the major problem is that Abidal can't have heavy impacts on his mid section, and because football is a contact sport (shoulder challenges, body checks, big slide tackles etc) that can lead to heavy knocks in the mid section, it wouldn't be advised for him to play again at a high level.

He will be 33/34 before he would be able to play again at all and the risks would be too high, imho.

He's better off just retiring and focusing on his family, getting healthy, keeping healthy and maybe starting a coaching career.

Normally, it's sad to hear of a player having to retire prematurely and of course, it's the same in this case. But it's more profound here, a long and healthy life with your family and loved ones is what it's all about. Football is just a game!

having had a liver transplant and been told that contact sports were out for 2 years min never mind not having a proper immune system that would mean that any infections are highly dangerous with the body not able to repair itself.
If and a big if he could play again at a high level he would be a true hero never mind a superman and would become my all-time football idol.
Big up to him and I hope he comes through this.
