Dog birthday party coming up in May, it's a very important part of your life if you are 5 and have no people birthdays to look forward to between February and August!

Will also be out on St. Pats day with a suitable badge (at least) attached to the dogs collar.

No hand-bag dogs on that list? I'll be getting one of those too, so I can bring my pup out with me and get him properly socialised :p

Getting a Pet to Practice Being Parents

The young cousins around and exploring as toddlers do

The border collie gives herself the job to round them up
The collie does it without being told, just her instinct

Though she has a habit of going to nip the childrens heels

    She nips me too.
If she can't herd sheep she herds people

The gist of what he wrote is fine but at times when he gets into the specifics he loses it. For example, yes getting a wild animal as a pet is not a good idea and is generally unwittingly cruel to the animal, but his inclusion of ferrets on the list is nonsense. Ferrets were domesticated thousands of years ago and can make a very fine pet for the right owner.

Also pet ownership and parenthood are in fact somewhat similar. Yes having a pet is generally easier as you can leave your dog/cat/ferret home alone while you go out for a few hours (though try take your pet and your baby on a foreign holiday with you and see which is easier). And yes the odds are you will love your baby more and be more invested in them but they are still similar experiences. Having a baby is expanding your family and so is getting a pet if you do it right. Our dogs are much loved family members and while they will come lower in the 'pecking order' than our baby their status as much loved family members will remain the same. (And ime, from the child's point of view, the family pet is 1000 times better than any stinky new sibling.)
