Hi everyone! So I'm in fifth year at the moment and I'm looking into what art course I want to do in college. Ultimately, I think I'd like to do concept art for films so I was wondering what your opinions would be on choosing between Visual Communications in NCAD/IADT or Design for Stage and Screen in IADT. Thanks a million! :D

Hiya, probably a bit late replying to you here but just saw this.
I'm in second year of Design for Stage and Screen right now, so I can tell ya what you need to know.
First of all, there's no specific course (in Ireland, than I've heard of anyway!) for conceptual art for films, it's quite rare to specialise JUST in that area, usually people who do the artwork are either Visual Artists or Production Designers by trade. If you want to design for films I strongly suggest you pick Design for Stage and Screen and specialise in Production Design because you won't do much film related design in any other course.

The advantages of doing Production Design in IADT for what you want to do are 1) that you have the opportunity to meet and work with Film students and use the National Film School facilities. Without working on sets and understanding all aspects of film making you'll never do anything in film, simple as! 2) You are learning all the skills you need to be able to conceptualise scripts and expand your design skills. Production Design is specifically designing the over all look of a film/play/television program and has the most conceptual freedom out of the 3 DSS disciplines in IADT.

Don't do Design for Stage and Screen if you're not prepared to take an interest in theatre as the course is 50/50 theatre and film.
Also remember Production Design for Stage and Screen and Vis Comm both use a lot of computers and a lot precision in design and making. And Production Design is does a lot of model making.

My personal opinion is that if you're interest is conceptual art in films you will not enjoy vis comm. But then I've never done the course so!
