Eircom router keeps powering off for a few seconds frequently

    Hello,

    I hope this is the correct forum. If not, please move the thread.

    Since a loooong time I have an issue that my Zyxel Eircom router powers off completely for just a few seconds and thus the whole internet connection dies with it. It immediately reconnects once the device is back up by itself. I had to find that out by watching the router and saw all the lights turned off and on again.
    Sometimes it keeps running for days without any interruption but on days like today, I already had 3 or 4 power-offs within the last 2 hours.

    I tried a different outlet as well as received a new router from eircom (same type, P-660HW-T1 v3). Yet the issue remains.
    Anyone got any idea why this might happen?

    Somewhere on this board there was a thread about it but couldn't find it anymore. People wrote they solved the issue by using a 3rd party router.

    Is it really the router and would that work? If so, what does the router have to have? ADSL only or ADSL2+?
    I'm on NGB 8 Mbit (but only get 4 Mbit). If you need more information, let me know and I'll post it.

    if it happened one modem,constantly power cycling..its a faulty modem.

    if it it happens on a 2nd modem it has to be something in the house causing it.Paddy powers wouldnt giving you odds on it happening to 2 modems even if they were eircom modems:D

    Hi Landorin,

    Thanks for your query. Please note the modem itself ,or the exchange, may not be the source of your intermitent connection issue. The following Tips from the eircom Community Forum website may be helpful in establishing where this problem stems from.

    Broadband Checklist

    BELOW IS A 6 POINT CHECKLIST - WHICH WILL HELP YOU TEST YOUR BROADBAND CONNECTION
    =============================================================================

    * 1. CHECK WHAT LIGHTS ARE ON THE MODEM /ROUTER - Power -Green Light?
    * 2 RESTART THE MODEM - Turn the modem off and on again .. .. .. ….
    * 3 REMOVE THE ADSL SPLITTER FROM THE PHONE SOCKET; remove the adsl adaptor
    * 4 USE ONLY THE DSL CABLE (RJ11) CONNECTED TO THE MODEM /ROUTER; this cable is normally coloured purple or black or grey.
    * 5 DISCONNECT ANY LONG EXTENSION PHONECABLE – Private phoneleads
    * 6 TEMPORARILY DISCONNECT ANY THIRD PARTY EQUIPMENT - Remove Sky (box/s), Fax from the Intenal wiring /phoneline.
    Once you have done this then -
    PLEASE TEST THE MODEM (ROUTER) DIRECTLY ON THE MAIN PHONE SOCKET (MDP)

    **Remember the MDP (Master phone Socket) is usually found just inside the hallway, or front of your house (First point of entry for the phoneline to the house /premises).

    Troubleshoot slow connections

    In some cases you may find that your broadband connection is not working or running slowly.
    *Note: Not all of the following steps may be necessary. Test your connection after each step to see if the issue is resolved..

    Disconnect everything from the phone line: phones, fax machine, Sky Digital TV, or any other equipment connected to the phone line which may interfere with the broadband connection. Remove the splitter and connect the modem directly to the main phone socket.

    Once you've done these quick checks, then you may wish to try a full hard reset on the modem.

    Remember to save your settings first : Please see - Reset Modem

    If you need to call eircom Technical Support after these checks, please see contact information below.

    Broadband Technical Support : 1890 260260 (locall); Hours : 08:00 - 22:00 (7 days).

    Please retain your case id /reference from Technical Support, as this will speed up your call and help if you need to follow this up. Alternatively, let me know or PM with your case id and I will follow this up with Technical Support.

    Best wishes,
    Ant

    If the power light is going off its the modem thats faulty. If the replacement modems power light is going off its also faulty, assuming you did'nt use the power cord from the first modem with the replacement. Unusual as you might think, but you tried a different socket and still the same. If it was a line fault or extension fault, this would not cause the power to the modem to fail. If it was a problem with your electric sockets, you would notice it with any other device you plug in to these sockets. This is assuming its the power light on the left of the modem.
