    Ahead of who ?

Ahead of nobody but as part of the squad. I hate the "ahead of" phrase, if I picked one match and one position to start him all you would hear is, oh so you think Powell is better than Young, Carrick or whoever do you? you know nothing.

I would like to see him given a chance to prove himself if we signed him and if good enough to be used as part of the squad when others are injured and tired. If he out preforms others in midfeild start him often, if not, don't. Just like the rest of the squad.

Why the talk of Adam Johnson?

If we were interested, why wouldn't we have got him from Boro when they were selling him for a reasonable price? Does anyone honestly think that City would sell to us? Or that Johnson would want all the hassle that comes with a move across town? Or that Fergie would want to be seen to sign a fringe player at City? Or that we need another winger ahead of a CM, when we already have some of the most effective wingers in the league?

    It really is silly season.

Manchester City will never sell Johnson to us and we shouldn't buy Johnson from them anyways, not because of some silly hatred of City, but because he is not good enough for United.

So Baines is talking about being flattered by United interest. I'd buy him if the money was right. Give Evra a massive kick up the hole at the very least, but I think I'd start Baines over him regardless. He's a dead ball specialist too, something we badly need tbh.

If we start buying players who are not good enough to get into their squad on match days, then it would really say alot about the direction the the club is taking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,422 ✭✭✭Fenix

I think Adam Johnson is actually an excellent player at the wrong club. Given the opertunities at a club that isnt a circus, I'm positive he'd be a regular starter for England.

That said, he's not right for us at the minute, a team like Newcastle Spurs or even Everton would be a good move for him, providing of course, that he actually wants to play and isn't happy lining his pockets on the bench.

    Good player though, rate him,

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,223 ✭✭✭Macca07

Unless he moves to a top 4/5 club, it's not going to help his chances of getting in the England team, the Euros squad has proved that.

I think he is a good player, but not what United need right now, we have enough wingers.

Think he would be a great signing for Liverpool.

Better player than Milner imo,I've a mate who's a City fan & he's puzzled as to why Johnson doesn't get more game time.If we got him for small money I'd have him at the club, who cares if he comes from City.Of course at this time he's not what we're looking for but if our record of injuries continues into next season then it'd be no harm to have some choice of players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,946 ✭✭✭KH25

I never thought we'd get Hazard and the way he carried on up to his transfer was sickening. Has any player ever carried on that way? Clearly just in it for the money.

I've said it before and I'd be very happy with Kagawa and another 2 or 3 signings. Baines wouldn't be a bad buy but I don't think left back is a priority at the minute.

He just isn't that good. I definitely wouldn't have him, a former average City player not good enough to get near their XI?

The 3 wingers we have are miles better.

If we sign Kagawa then I'm sure we will see Rooney linked with many clubs, saying Kagawa is Rooney's replacement and all.

If we got a big price, with every last penny re-invested into high quality transfers, I'd probably take it, hypothetically speaking.

For the money we'd get for Rooney, we'd have to spend a similar amount to get a replacement of his calibre and profile.

Makes no sense to sell Rooney on so many levels.

The real reason why Hazard chose Chelsea.

    And replace him with who?

Even a half decent player will cost more than 20 Million and to replace the player who is the heartbeat of the team will take us in only one direction.

If I'm being utterly blunt, Kagawa isn't too far off Rooney.

However, bar Kagawa, the squad needs at most 4 players. Powell would be one. If the right LB came in (I'm thinking Mathieu on a year's loan) he wouldn't be expensive. And then, the 2 CM are the ones who need investment. But if it's 20m for Kagawa, Mathieu and Powell, that's ~40m for the two other CM players United need (More than enough), if the Glazers were prepared to spend the same as they did last season, which was ~60m (I know it wasn't quite). You wouldn't have had much more than 10m come in from sales last time, and with Berbatov going that should be met. Bebe, Macheda, Anderson and Park could be sold too.

So as long as the owners are happy to put in the same amount of money for transfers as they have shown they have before, Rooney doesn't need to be sold. the team isn't in THAT much need of improvment. I think it's 5 players away, and it won't take any more money than seasons gone by. Plus Rooney offers so much as a player.

We actually gave Adam Johnson a tour of Carrington in view to a move when he was a Boro player. City outpriced us and he accepted their terms.

    So...

The €150 million includes wages so the transfer fee would have to take that into consideration, plus as was said already, who would we get to replace him?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,988 ✭✭✭SirDelboy18

Lets keep in mind that it is hypothetical. Well for the money mooted we would be able to get someone like Cavani and another big name in the AM slot. That's not including whatever money is already put aside for transfers, which, I am assuming would be spent as normal.

Ok, most of the tags we have for this forum are pretty funny, but the "shamekonydidntgetyaya" is a bit tasteless tbh. I know the Kony campaign was a joke, but doesn't mean it should be laughted at either.

genuine question here - lets say we sold rooney and Berba and got 65-70million pounds for the two of them combined, not that unrealistic to be fair.

would you be happy IF this money was used then to sign two new strikers?

Cavani and Llorente would be approachable if we had 35million to throw at both of them.

my only concern would be that we would f*ck up the deals and then complain about value and the money sits in the accounts for about 3 years, like the ronaldo money.

I cant think of any player I`d like to lose less in the current squad than Rooney. Much as hes annoyed me over the last couple of seasons, he really is the heartbeat of the team.

I`d also be astonished if we got £65 - £70 million for both. £60 million tops and that would be a push.

I genuinely worry about Rooneys long term future at the club. I dont get the sense he is 100% happy at United. Not winning league or European honours will only compund that imo.

Not winning league for a year after winning 4 in 6?

He did a mistake (From our point of view) and apologized(Then had an amazing second half of the season) and moved on. It's about time everyone does the same.

    We're selling Rooney again??
This is coming up a lot lately and it's madness really.
There is a chance that it could work out for the better depending on who is brought in with the money but it's a massive unnecessary gamble.

Okay, you tell me a club that he can go to where he'll win the league EVERY single season? We won 4 out of the last 6 league titles and lost the last one on GD, and the one in 2010 by 1 point ffs.

This stuff about Rooney not being 100% happy, there is absolutely no substance to it at all. Rooney has repeatedly reiterated that he's happy at the club and will stay for as long as the club want him to, and the club have maintained that they're happy with him.

He has several years remaining on his contract, is on a top wage, is scoring goals for fun and is competing for major honours.

If anyone wants to have a bet over whether or not he'll be here after this window, then drop me a PM. I like free money.

    Interesting from BBC regarding Kagawa.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18262878
Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa after agreeing a deal in principle with his club Borussia Dortmund.

The 23-year-old has still to agree personal terms but United expect negotiations to progress smoothly.

The initial fee for Kagawa is in the region of £12m, rising to £17m depending on success and appearances.

I've heard that too - can't remember where though.

In other news, I'm very happy to see England supporters now begging for Michael Carrick as their midfield is destroyed by injuries ( First Barry, now Lampard suspected to be gone too ). Should have been starting anyway and I hope he stays well away if Hodgson does call, due to the emergency circumstances that Carrick had mentioned to the FA.

Good news^. Lindegaard is too good to stick around on the bench while De Gea plays, Amos will provide great back-up in years to come.
Scholes' break showed us how much we miss him in the team, despite his age he was still one of the outstanding midfielders in the Premier League last year.
