I haven't bought food in a cinema in years - total rip off price wise. I buy it all in tesco for a fraction of the price but then again, I haven't really got the money to be throwing away. That's another story for another thread.

I've never experienced upselling in a cinema though - I've only ever seen the large pictures with the meal deals - don't think I'd like someone going over my head and trying to get my husband to buy extra or upgrade or whatever.

If it's just as case of the guy/girl going - do you want nachos with that or go large or whatever like they do in Mc Donalds or Supermacs, I wouldn't mind that but beyond that would be crossing a line.

Once ever did I experience upselling in a cinema. It was the girlfriends turn to buy, she was about to take her purse out when the sales assistant asked me did I want a bag of sweets with that

The girlfriend was annoyed that sales assistant presumed it would be the man paying, I was just pissed off with the upselling. I'd have got a bag of sweets if I wanted it (we actually had all our food bought in a shop on the way in anyway).

We didn't take the sweets, and have never gone back to that cinema again.

I think I fairly flung a fiver at her and practically ran out of the shop. Haven't gone back since and it is a place I will actively avoid for the rest of my life. What the hell is wrong with these people??

With them upselling and some customers overreacting I dunno what the world is coming too. A simple no is all that's required and if that does not work just say I'm not interested thanks.
Boycotting a shop or cinema that you like is stupid, the only one losing out is yourself. You are the customer, why let someone who is doing their job ruin your day.

Used to work in a cinema.

Women would come up looking for two small cokes, and a small popcorn. I'd tell them it's a euro cheaper if they get two medium drinks and a small popcorn.

This is classed as an "upsell". Upsells are primarily used to sell more for cheaper. The benefit of this is that people get the deals into their head. The reason is that if you're thinking of going to the cinema, you'll want to see X film and have Y combo. And as V cinema has Y combo, you'll goto V cinema.

Similar to the BigMac meal only being in McDonalds; kids will associate burger and fries as "BigMac meal" and continue going back.

The ironic thing is that as they get their money from the sweets drinks and popcorn, and not the tickets, they never really had your custom (as you bought the sweets in the shop) , so by you not going they didn't really loose much.

A-I-D-A. Get out there - you got the prospects coming in. You think the came in to get out of the rain? A guy don't walk on the lot lest he wants to buy. They're sitting out there waiting to give you their money. Are you gonna take it? Are you man enough to take it?"

You know what it takes to upsell? Takes brass balls to upsell

ive found, over here at least, that a very simple "this is all, not interested in anything else, don't bother trying to upsell to me or ill buy elsewhere instead", said nicely as possible does the job
