It's the voter who chooses their candidate by "what are you going to do for me?" that has this country broke. Values and principles have no meaning to the selfish voter.

Apparently Phil Hogan had a good reason to want to turn them down.

Sadly the County Council placed them anyway. I knew one of those scumbag McGuinness would want to play the big hero.

According to a post on the merging of Kilkenny and Carlow it is suggested our Phil is attempting to make Kilkenny the Capital of the South East, wondered what happened to my 100euro.
    Any truth in the rumour

Where did you hear this non-sense? It was someone's opinion. You do realise "Capital" of the South East means jack sh!t anyhow? There's one Capital in the country and that's Dublin.
Kilkenny will develop on it's own merits with private enterprise while maximising on it's location, infrastructure and positive business environment. Not hysterical conspiracy theories that plaugue these boards.

Hear hear. The current crowd might be bad but they did not create the mess we are in.
John McGuinness was an absolute disgrace as FF TD for Kilkenny under Bertie. We were completely sidelined under those govts. Once Cowen become (disasterous) Taoiseach he was promptly sacked from his Junior little position, but kept voting for FF of course.
A pathetic display in Nowlan Park that night. Same sheep were surely whinging we had no Minister for years. Might not agree with his policies but a bit of respect and decorum would not go astray.

If people continuously expect the worst from travellers they will never have the motivation to do better.

Did you see our man in a far off land with a drink and a companion, it was so the article stated a fully paid expenses trip, looks like we are being shafted again.
Probably turning the sod at St Lukes was too much for the old fella

Who can forget Mary Harney and FAS executive trip to Florida [at our expense as well] and she used our money for a $700 haircut that looked like she didn't do anything to it.

I love all the outrage when the same people were dead quiet while FF were driving this country of the cliff.

ahh yeah i have seen it on another web site, 605 merkles per night they said, it has a few bedrooms a couple of bathrooms, wtf did he want that amount of room on a junket for, it seemed he paid for the drinks in cash, two small beers and two white wines cost 55 merkles, after yesterdays budget there will not be too many from there parts using facilitys like that, the wan snuggling into his armpit is one of his advisers, on 83k a year she is, ahh yeahh, if i was seen in a far off place with a wan snuggled into my oxter, would folk be as kind in their comments as i have been about them.

Tabloid trash...have you never been on a worktrip away and had a drink or two in the evening? It's what you do to relax.
Hopefully he'll bring back a jobs or investment to Ireland/Kilkenny.

You'd have something to complain about if he wasn't there and the A&E unit at St. Lukes was being closed down and transferred elsewhere.

To be fair, its part of his job. He had to attend this meeting as Environment Minister. He didn't go away on holidays. He went away on work and they kept things fairly tight finance wise. His 'companion' was one of his staff.

Well according to the Irish Independent, your figures are wrong. He is attending a meeting with some staff (which is normal) on UN's Framework Convention on Climate Change. As Minister for Environment, this is the type of thing you would expect.
The group are flying economy at a cost of €500 each, and all are staying at the "lowest" level of accommodation available at the upmarket Kempinski hotel.

That means that officials are sharing two-bedroom apartments, with only Mr Hogan having a one-bedroom unit to himself.

A cut-price deal of €298 per two-room apartment has been secured

    ...

"The total costs of accommodation for the minister and departmental staff are an average of €149 per night. The average cost of flights are €500 a head."

No Sully it's far more fashionable to attack politicians and jump onto the pichfork brigade.
If all these people are so outraged, then why not run for the Dail etc.?

Networking and conferences are a HUGE part of being a politician, that's even before you get to influeincing policy and investment on our parts. This costs money.
I'm far more concerned about the €20 Billion spending on Social Welfare. Now there is a gravy train that needs to be tackled, and one we just cannot afford. But you're a right wing Thatcherite if you point out this sad reality.

Tbh I don't see any problem with a Minister socialising in any shape or form after a meeting. Its very common - even for smaller businesses and organisations. Do people expect him to do nothing just sit in his room?

As long as he wasn't over there claiming massive expenses like former administrations, I wouldn't be annoyed.

The irony is he doesn't give a hoot about climate change and since he took over in Environment he has made his business to ditch the climate change agenda that previous Ministers had shaped.

As a matter of fact he doesn't need to attend the conference, officials could have represented him and/or he could have sent his junior Minister but despite having no interest in the subject matter of the conference he chose to attend and in doing so he missed the last three Cabinet meetings immediately before the budget. This is all the worse given that the property tax which he is responsible for is a central plank of the budget and has been subject to last minute adjustments at Cabinet (mansion tax, change to the basic rate etc.) but he wasn't there for these discussions and he should have been.

According to the media, a lot of Ministers were there. With Ireland holding the Presidency of the EU, that may have influenced things a little more.

If it was me, id have sent my Junior and dealt with the issues surrounding the property tax and so on. I'm sure during cabinet discussions he wouldn't have had much to say or do, his colleagues in his department would be just as good

    What colleagues?

He is not allowed to send a junior Minister or an official to substitute when he chooses not to attend Cabinet. The only non Ministers who can sit in on a Cabinet meeting are the super Junior (Jan O'Sullivan), the Chief Whip (paul Kehoe) and the Secretary General to the Government. Because Hogan attended the climate change conference the views of his Department were not represented at the last three Cabinet meetings.

I think the photograph was suggestive of that, but I don't believe that was the way it was intended tbh. They also appeared completely unaware the photographer was present. I'm not convinced its the way its being suggested in the slightest - especially when its a tabloid printing it.
