10 Things You Hate About Gaming

A new thread with a twist , we can all give a million and one reasons why we enjoy gaming but i thought it be interesting to hear what people hate about gaming because with every good comes with bad so lets begin in no particular order

10.Fanboys: something for the most part we were apart of as kids in one way or another but as we grow up and mature seening all these new kids on the block raging that their console is better or cod is the best game ever folks really get on my tits .. I hate them all :pac:

    9. Day 1 patches : ya wait months to a year for your fav game to come out and cant wait to get cracking on it playing with friends but ya cant cause theres problems connecting to games or theres bugs that were not ironed out before hand and just makes the game feel rushed . Whats the point of play testing if you are just ignoring feedback .

8.dlc / locked on disk: dont mind when its done correctly but this has being addressed before so no point getting into it now.

7.exclusives: i hate when games are tied down to one console , i dont want tomhave to shell out an extra 300-400 euros for another console just to play that game , games should be on every console , not just the one , unless a developer bought out by a company it should be multi play

    6. Copy cats: companies making their flagship games or new ips and trying to make them into the popular thing on the market just to get those people to come over most notable example capcom comments towards making resident evil 6 like call of duty , it really does annoy the **** out of me and 2. It makes you look unorginial and sheer lazy as a developer.

    5. Drm: need i say more

4.Crappy endings: investing so much money and time into your fav games just cant wait to see what happens at the end just to get a big slap in the face and all that time going WTF!

3.being disrespected by companies : i read articles before that community forums like dice disrespected gamers that followed a complaint that controls were awful and one of the community mod said if you think if theres a problem with the controls you must be on drugs , thats not acceptable if you are a professional and anyone talking down on you from higher up should not be tolerated , it seems these companies forget who build their buildings and put money in their pockets ..

    2. Thrash talkers and F bombs by 12 year old warriors and samurai keyboard: seems ya cant be respectful anymore to other people if you win a match or just learning for the first time just to have some little asshole on the other end typing or shouting noob or pwned.. Even those who shout the N word .. Sure theres a mute button , still ****in annoying and they should all **** off for being right twats :pac:

    1. Region locking: this should not be a problem anymore but companies still do it , if a certain game does not come in your country that you want you should be allowed to order it online , i dont get why companies still do this ...

Anyways thats what i think anyways .. Like to hear your thoughts if you have any ?:pac:

    Creatively Bankrupt Blockbusters.

Nearly every big name game seens to be copying every other big name game lately and there's very little room for innovation, creativity or trying something new. Thank god for indies.

    'AAA' games

Listen developers, you mean big budget game because your game isn't 'AAA' until the reviews come in. And **** you Microsoft for recently having a press release about hiring for a 'AAAA' game. Does the extra A mean it's 25% better than anything else?

    Nickle and Diming DLC tactics

While some companies do DLC right the vast majority of the time it adds absolutely nothing to the game and takes resources that could have gone into making a game better just to get a few extra euros out of players. Even companies like Bioware churn out DLC by their junior teams which always disappoints.

    DRM

Fighting piracy is like fighting the drug problem. It's not going anywhere. So instead of making life worse for your paying customers how about dealing with piracy and factoring it into the budget. There's absolutely nothing you can do about it and the pirates aren't going to pay for it anyway. Also how about this, stop giving out review copies to every nobody with a crappy blog since it's very obvious that these are the people responsible for leaking games.

The 2nd hand market is evil

Every other industry deals with a second hand market, games aren't unique. Offer people better value for money and stop believing the idiotic notion that every second hand sale is a lost sale. Your biggest market is children and teens that have no income and can't buy afford to buy a new release every month at the prices charged.

    Online Gaming

The biggest cesspit of scum and villiany since Mos Eisley

Crap writing praised by crap journalists

Stuff like Heavy Rain which would barely pass as a CSI episode would be laughed at if it was in the literary or film medium. Games journalists need to to stop pandering to the advert revenue men and grow some balls instead of letting games get way with criticism and stop handing 10/10's to everything. Less pf the clueless journalists at giant bomb and more 1up please.

    Region Locking

It's a free open market and you are making things worse for your smaller third party publishers. The recent region locking of the 3DS, a portable system, is absolutely ridiculous.

    1. Day 1 DLC: I despise this esp when the dlc is €40 of courses(TW12) if you can release 20-30 courses day 1 then you have held back content that could have gone on the disc

    2. Pre-order exclusives: i hate this because it attempts to make you buy the game in a certain store

    3. Region locking why do companies do this (EA:mad::mad:) if you don't want to sell a game in a certain region because of a lack of popularity fair enough but don't actively block me from buying a game i want to play (NCAA on 360) because i live in a different country

    4. Trash talking: I've been called **gger on BF3(PC) so many times and various sectarian insults playing 360. I don't give a **** about being insulted but I do start to loose a little faith in humanity when i see these idiotic comments

    5. DRM: this bugs the crap out of me when i buy a game and the DRM causes me more problems than if I pirated it like really why punish people who legitimately buy the game. its stupid

    6. Tacted on single-player: Why bother if you're creating a game based on multi-player(BF3) why waste time on a crap single player mode (I love single player games I prefer them in most cases to multi-player)

    7. releasing the same game every year with no real innovation : TW13 and MW3 are prime examples of this no graphical update from the last edition TW13 looks the same as TW09 and the mechanics haven't changed in the slightest. MW3 is MW2 with worse maps, same graphics, same mechanics with some novelty features.

    8. Bought Reviews: I don't even read reviews anymore from the mainstream sites because of this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭mooonpie

    Review Scores
There was a time when a game getting 9/10 was a rarity and even reading a 10/10 review felt like something special.

Nowadays I read all reviews as if they've been given a +2 handicap :(

DRM: It's based almost purely on bad logic; something that makes the game harder to tolerate for a legitimate buyer. It's like the FBI Warnings and You Wouldn't Steal a Car on the front of DVD movies, you're just wasting the time of someone who has bought your sh*t already to ask them not to steal your sh*t. The pirate already started watching the Movie 5 minutes ago.

Server Perks: Bad hosted servers that grant privileges to donators like reserved slots or (far worse) team balance immunity. Reserved Slots end up kicking the same player out of the server 5 or 6 times in succession, and the latter ruins the entire thing.

Retained DLC: It's there, it's ready, and for just an extra $10, the developers will turn a 0 into a 1 so you can use DLC they had already completed months ago but knew you would be willing to pay for it 2 months down the road.

    Corporate Serial Killing
: Oh hey, you're a successful small game developer, heres a fraction of our GDP (but ten times what yours is) we're buying you out. We won't mess with you we just want to support you and put our logo on your game. [1 year later] Yeah you aren't making enough cash for us, so we're disbanding your studio and splitting you guys up. Half of you will work on the Sims and the other half will work on Battlefield. Your existing, critically acclaimed IPs and all of their sequels will float around in Developer Hell for the next fifteen years.

Exclusives: Vanquish, get on PC. Even Megaman X came out for Windows 95. Seriously. Get some. Games should be about Games, not what they are played on.

Ridiculous price tags: $30 is the perfect price point for a game. I can understand when you're COD and you have several million adoring zombies you will pay full price every Fall but if you're not, you need to get off your high rocker and charge a fair price for your title. Sick especially of titles that launch for $60 and drop to $35 2 months later when the critics panned your sh*t to the ground.

    Hats (only kidding!).

Can't really think of ten off the bat but I'll get my number one off my chest:

If I had to say it'd be the concept of the casual/mobile (or flash) gaming of today. I mean Angry Birds? How in the hell did a simple game that's been done a million times before get so huge!?

    1. DLC. Cutting out pieces of the game to screw a few extra quid out of people who already paid £60 for the games special edition in the first place.
    2. Releasing a new game in several different editions. £60 for a few extra costumes and some postcards is a joke.
    3. Pricing. Charging extortionate amounts of money and then moaning why nobody buys them.
    4. Patches. Leave it a month or 2 if it means ironing out the bugs. Seeing bugs everywhere is just sloppy and really takes away from some great games.
    5. Online gaming. For obvious reasons.
    6. These new pay monthly memberships.
    7. Imitation. If it’s popular, let’s just saturate the market with it instead of innovating and coming up with something new.
    8. Poor quality technology. Starting to really lose my patience with the amount of PSPs I’m going through.
    9. The demise of single player. It matters. Not everyone wants to go online to be shouted at and insulted by a load of whiny wee brats.
    10. Crappy journalism. Barely cover any info about a game, just gloss over the basics with a handicap of +7. Sorted.

    Valve time.

Really hate when a game is announced and then isn't released for 2 or 3 years..

About actual games tho.. the worst thing is bad controls... i don't care how good a games story may be, if you can't get the basic controls right then its flat out not worth playing imo. I can live with a game with a horrible/cheesy story as long as the gameplay is fun and the controls are solid. It is better if it has both tho !

    1. Online multiplayer games, tried it for a while to see what all the fuss was about, hated it
    2. People who have an extreme sense of entitlement and constantly moan about the idea that gaming companies try to make money
    3. People who moan for months about a game having day one DLC then buy it 5 minutes after starting up the game
    4. Poor level design, not such a big issue these days with most games being so simple but its always infuriating getting stuck in a game because of stupid design
    5. Video reviews and game scores, mainly the usual few big reviewers who'll never give a generic big money game less than an 8.5 yet sh*t all over genuinely innovate games from small companies
    6. Games like COD, FIFA etc that release a slightly tweaked game every year yet still outsell everyone. Can't blame the companies of course but still annoying to see it happen

That'll do for now, don't have time to think of another four!

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,579 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

a lot of what has been said.

    1. dlc
    2. day 1 patches (****ing hell this annoys me the most).
    3. badly designed menus.
    4. yearly updates like cod.
    5. friends that go on and on about certain games that i have no interest in and look at me like i'm a spider in a video game when i say so.
    6. trophies and achievements (this will be an unpopular one, but i think it just a form of elitism).
    7. linear games taking mainstream now as opposed to yester year.
    8. shop exclusives, buy in gamestop get a different skin.
    9. fan boys.

    and last but not least....

    10. SPIDERS (don't have a phobia or anything but they just freak the **** out of me).

Gamers on the Internet - a vocal minority making us all look bad as they complain about everything and look like absolute jackasses in the process. Also known as: metacritic users. A shame, given so many others are working tirelessly to form a welcoming, content-rich community.

Format exclusive gamers - unless you genuinely don't have the money (and let's be honest, if you can build a monster PC, you can afford a cheap 360), there's absolutely no excuse these days not to game on a wide variety of formats. And if you're doing it out of some sort of moral stance, then you should surrender the right to complain about it :pac:

Awkward saving systems - Autosave is frankly the best thing that ever happened. I include sliced bread in that analysis.

New-fangled control schemes that only ever work with the broadest possible gameplay parameters.

The fact that a majority of game developers have absolutely no idea how to tell a story and embrace the inherent possibilities of their chosen medium.
(see also: a serious lack of subtlety in terms of tone, themes, writing and narrative)

The dismal absence of an intelligent gaming critical language - all games are reviewed like products, and it makes for a painful, stunted discourse.

That vibrant, innovative games consistently fail to sell well. Worse, that so many of the people who don't buy these games often bemoan a lack of originality in gaming :P

    Misjudged difficulty spikes. Ugh.

The continued absence of original voicetracks in a vast majority of games. Made worse by the fact that a couple of smaller companies are able to manage it with nary a bother.

Repetition - the day when length alone became considered as 'value for money' was a sad one. So many games are overlong and stuffed with filler material. Games like Journey are a joy: in control of themselves, and refuse to overstay their welcome. A game should be as long as it needs to be: we only retain the right to complain when it genuinely feels rushed or cut off before a peak. Something as tightly designed as Vanquish proves that a lean running time is by no means a negative.

Pointless subquests with largely worthless rewards - see above.

    Not 10 but:
    1. Escort missions. The breaking point for me was dying for the 200th time doing the same mission in Spartan Total Warrior on PS2.
    2. Multiplayer. Not all multiplayer; just the fact developers believe every game should just have single player mode as practice as multiplayer. As a single player person, this is the reason I don't buy games like Call of Duty.

    Well a megabitch thread eh?

    1. People who talk total shiet about pc gaming while having a zero knowledge about. Know only one phrase: " it's expencive and uses baby blood to power on!!!!! "

    2. Gamers who can newer ever put away pink tinted nostalgia glasses.

    3. Games, which have a campaing based for coop, and then totally suck if you try it to play it as a sinlge player game with a.i.

    4. All of the underwater levels. Those can just go and F themselfs all night long.

    5. Activision/EA

    6. Dlc content made before release amd/or already on the disc. Just feck off with your excuses. We all know how it's done.

    7. Paying for xbox live. I don't play much on Xbox, but I might play it now and then, but I can't justify paying a sub for playing a game once or twice a month. This is the reason I buy multiplatform "console" games on ps3 now.

    8. Capcom bull**** with "super duper 18inch edition of cock slap 14!!" fallowed by " super duper 22inch edition of cock slap 14" for full retail price.

    9. Moaning that game cost alot to make. It's a business FFs, invest money and make a good product, then you will make a lot of money. Invest a lot of money and make **** product? Then good luck to ya! Same applies to any industry in the world, gaming is not special.

    10. Stupid DRM which hurts paying customer, not a pirate.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭CORaven

The lack of variety of third party hardware for consoles and the restrictions imposed.
You can buy one type of wireless controller for the 360 and it is the official one. The wired alternatives (Razer Onza in particular) tend to be of poor quality or have a limited life span.
As for headsets, the decision to use 2.5mm ports was for money making reasons. It would have been nice to use bog standard PC headsets.

The insanity that is the price of a video game.
When a game comes out, it starts out at €60. At this point the game is probably buggy and may not be enjoyable.
Two weeks later it can be at half of this value when there are positive reviews out and all the bugs are patched.

    Content restriction.
Ok, I do not mind having to pay for a vanity item in multiplayer, but the removal of content just to charge extra for it is an ass of a thing to do. Gears of War 2 had a level that was removed and sold as an extra because the campaign felt too long with it included.

    The under utilisation of multiplayer.
CoD, another year, another separate 15 maps (on disk).
Developers that make game series should look more to the Halo franchise where they used the same multiplayer across other installations of the series. If you owned Halo Reach, you could buy the Anniversary maps and enjoy a larger player base with a larger variety of maps.
This would also solve fans constantly requesting older maps they already own on a different disc.

The lack of good sportsmanship in games.
    If you win, you are:
    using a lag switch
    a sponge
    cheating
    a fa***t
    using broken tactics/weapons
    reported
    a no life

    If you lose, you are:
    useless
    a liability
    kicked
    a dirty scrub
    a c*** sucker
    a fa***t
    on youtube

    Poor plot and shallow characters.
If I want to play the story mode or campaign, please let it be good. There are plots that could be written by school children with over active imaginations.

    Unskipable cut scenes and intros.
Click. click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click.
I am looking at you Civ V.

    Negative image.
Tell someone how much you play games over the weekend. More than 6 hours? You are an addict.
Ask them how much time they spent in front of their tv like a vegetable and some how it is more acceptable.

Complaining about having to pay for a premium service like XBL
Well no one said it was for free.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Lack of support by Nintendo for 3DS in the first few months of launch.

Same again with Sony for PSP GO and the Vita, these systems should have had top-quality games at launch. Not crappy ports and out of date games. I'm looking at you FIFA 11 on Vita.

Lack of backwards compatibility on next gen consoles. Many of us have Xbox,Gamecube and PS1&2 games which are now useless yet the stores are full of ****e like Tintin, even the vita and 3DS should have had UMD and GBA slots but no dice.

    1. Elitist PC gamers who act like they are the gaming royal family & console players are casual kiddy gamers.
    2. The whinging that goes on in the likes of metacritic, said before but it really annoys me.
    3. That all single player games must now have multiplayer. I have yet to try Dead Space 2 MP, I never will so I cant really comment on it but I cant help feeling that it detracted from the single player.
    4. Hype. The absolute crazy way games are hyped for 2 years like they are going to revolutionize the industry & the constant media frenzy surrounding certain AAA titles.
    5. Advertising in games, adds for batteries & chewing gum on every second billboard in a game.
    6. Turret sections... boring and generic.
    7. quick time events... see above.
    8. Bad dialogue, there is so much bad dialogue in games.
    9. Writing, stories in games are all so similar these days, presidents daughter is kidnapped by terrorists who have a nuke & zombie virus. 'its COD*RE*BF3*GOW etc... annoys me that the games dominating the market are all the equivalent of Transformers 2
    10. Simplified level design, I love games that have interesting architecture, buildings that feel like proper buildings not one long corridor with cut-scenes & boss fights.

    Thanks, I feel better now...

Awkward saving systems - Autosave is frankly the best thing that ever happened. I include sliced bread in that analysis.

And yet Demons Souls and Dark Souls show that with great design you can build a great game around an archaic save system. Also I feel some developers use frequent auto-saving as a way to smooth over some terrible level design, such as in a few sections in Uncharted 3.

Nothing wrong with save points when done well - many RPGs or challenging games, for example, would lose a lot of their urgency or risk/reward balance if they were autosaving every few seconds (even though Strange Journey, for example, can require some urgent save point searches, I still think it requires them). The Souls games are a great mix of the two: autosave that isn't used as a mere damage limitator.

That said, that only applies to a certain amount of games, and I absolutely hate it when a game has an hour or two between save opportunities. Autosave is particularly good for ensuring huge chunks don't have to be replayed: something we will all recall from the dark old days.
