Hi all, a few months back I saw a recall notice from
Apple regarding iPod nano 1st generation and overheating battery, my nano was fine but decided to send back anyway as it was free to do so and what harm I thought I may get a fresh new battery in my very dated 1st gen nano, to my very happy surprise ups arrived today with a nice new but probably refurbished iPod nano 6th gen RESULT!!!!!

So anyone with a 1st gen nano use link below and you might also be lucky here

I've just submitted my application to Apple. Waiting for shipping info now. :)

I'd say once it looks ok cosmetically id say they will replace it, no harm in trying anyways

Just had my 4gb 1st generation Nano replaced. I thought they'd send a replacement 1st generation Nano but turned out to be a 8gb 6th generation! took a while though.

got mine replaced and received an 8gb touch screen as replacment.

Kinda pissed i dident the origional one back as the design was iconic and with steve's death would have been worth more.

Suppose Apple have to waste their $98 Billion dollar cash in hand somehow?

One of my mates had a similar situation to the OP. Both are lucky bastards in my eyes. :D

Can you buy a first gen ipod nano (ebay?) and then send it off to apple for a new nano? That would make it a first bargain apple product

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 517 ✭✭✭omega42

Prob with that is if its advertised as 1st gen but when u receive it its not :(

No, it doesn't have to be working or look nice.

Source: I sent mine back - it didn't turn on anymore and I had dissolved the front screen -- I had a protector on the front of the nano and when I removed it there was some glue left behind, I used nail polish remover -- it removed the glue, but it turned out it also dissolved the plastic the front of the nano was made of.

    I received a brand new 8gb 6th gen nano as a replacement.

I did it too..And i was still using my old nano daily, absolutely nothing wrong with it but thought may as well try... It was all legit sone through the Apple site so kind of knew it wasn't a scam. Submitted my details, they sent me a UPS prepaid envelope to put my old one in, 6 weeks later got brand new touch screen nano with ten times more storage...Love it!

You probably paid for 10 replacements when you originally bought it.

No wonder apple has 98 Billion

You realise that the Zen and other mp3 players (at the time of the iPod nano 1st gen) were all comparable in price, yeah?
    Nothing comes free in life!

Except my nano actually was free as it was given to me as it was so old... !

Does this apply to all first gen nanos or just a specific range?

Damn, I have one of these but our 3 year old decided that it was her mobile phone a couple of months ago and now I can't find it :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭Kev.

I went on to the link and entered the serial number in and it prompted me to log in with my apple ID

then the page went onto something else.

Do the email you details or should I have seen a different screen?

    TIA

I have a very old ipod nano, just not sure if it's 1st gen.
It's a slim white one, but doesn't have a colour screen (like this without colour: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2011/11/16/1321403089788/Apple-recalls-nano-007.jpg)
Would this be eligible? (I've searched the apple website + google and they're coming up with some conflicting stuff, especially google images!)
I think I recall the chunkier coloured ipod nanos coming before the one I have, http://i.t.com.com/i/lumiere/2006/05/31/31137650-320-0-20065-20060531_123156-320x240.jpg
tho I could be wrong...if anyone can clarify it'd be much appreciated!

The first link is the 1st generation - they came with a black or white plastic front (2nd generation was metal front). The second link is the ipod mini.

I had a 2Gb & a 4Gb in each of the cars permanently, that potential fire hazard was a small bit worrying. Registered both of them for the replacement program, just waiting on shipping package now.

Fair play the Apple, they have the number 1 customer care in my books. They replaced my iPad & my iPhone for free in the past few weeks & now this!

    Here's hoping they do an iPhone 2G & a 3GS swap out!

Not the best advertisement for Apple really. You've had to replace an ipad, ipod and iphone.:o

I should clarify, I dropped my iPad & cracked the screen, they replaced it. I dropped my iPhone 4, the speaker stopped working, they replaced it. Does that change the perspective?

Cheers OP, I sent mine off 2 weeks ago when this was first posted and Apple have sent email saying 6th gen IPod has been sent and is due to arrive tomorrow. Best BA ever!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭Peter B

Is there anywhere you can log in to to track the progress of your Nano?

Just so people know I got this ehh "offer". Got a new nano the really small touch screen one. I called apple who said I was getting an old 1st gen nano. Also after I called I got it within a week, mind you I had been waiting over 5 weeks at the time it came in the post. Your replacement can be tracked via the apple website.

    Step 1 Request

March 21, 2012: Empty box shipped

Is this the normal turnaround time?

    Step 2 is:

    Step 2 Service

    Diagnosis pending
