Taking time off for an interview

I am posting under a new name to post this question. I am currently covering for another teacher for a year. A lot of work was not covered by this teacher and I am playing catch-up. I will not have a job next year (Principal told me) so have been applying to schools in the UK. I hope to get something here, but want to check out all of my options. I have been offered a short-notice interview by an agency. It is on Friday of this week. I am afraid to ask for a personal day. We have a sort Friday and I actually only have 4 classes that day. I think that I will not be allowed take a personal day, as it is short-notice and the school really dont want me missing days when my classes are so far behind. Should I ring in sick? Interview cant be changed and is right in the middle of school day? Feel really bad even considering it, but also need to look out for myself! I work beside the Airport and the interview is in the Airport Hotel, so am I looking to be caught?

Really long post, I know, but I would like to hear what other secondary teachers would do/ have heard of people doing. Thanks

Don't ring in sick, they may ring the school to check references or whatever. I'd be upfront, any reasonable principal will try to help someone out in this case.

I would be honest and explain the situation to your principal.
The principal has told you there is no job there for you next year, therefore, you are obviously applying for jobs.
You are a sub and will not be paid for days missed.
Any decent principal will understand and given adequate notice, would have no problem giving you the time off for interview.
Leave plenty of work for your classes.
    Tell your principal - tomorrow!

i agree. especially as it sounds you will be missing 2-3 classes. Some schools will allow you cover your own classes as favours with other teachers so everyone is happy, tell your principal.......

Indeed, agree with the others, if the principal is reasonable, he/she should be delighted to let you off for interview.

You might want to take the attitude. 'ask em? Bollix tell em!

Ie: tell the principal that you have an interview and that you must attend it. Then see what he/she says.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll get a post.
