How long does it take for google to index a website? obviously they are certain variables at play. I have a website which is doing quite good with visitors etc, but it does nt show up when i put the name into the google search engine. Having said all that, when i check the traffic in the mornings, i find the site has had visits from the USA,china,GB,most of europe,Japan etc, so I'm wondering how are they finding the site.

Would anyone think i should hire a person to set up the SEO for the site properly?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

If it is an ecommerce site hiring an experienced SEO specialist is a great investment in your business. For a personal site if I were you I would probably use the site as a way to learn and gain SEO experience myself.

Thanks for your reply, yes it is an e-commerce site.

Would you be able to recommend anyone regarding the SEO?

I'm doing SEO on a number of e-commerce sites at the moment what I find when a new website is launched is that Google can rank pages quick and you'll get lots of traffic. This can last a week or two and then is might drop a lots of these pages if they are simply data feeds or have very little content on the page.

    Here are a few tips

    1) You need to make sure you offer good unique content on pages and not just data feeds that are on 100's of other websites.

    2) Ensure basic onsite SEO is done (Title tags, H1 etc) you can lots of information online about this.

    3) Name images the same as the product, Image search can bring lots of traffic.

    4) Get links into your website for product pages and home pages this will help get pages indexed and of course ranking.

Gotta love it when someone gives good quality, specialist advice for free ... and the recipient says "yeah, thanks, but I'm gonna go and hire someone else"

No specific time to index a website, it may be index within one week or may be more than that. But if you upload Google/Bing Webmaster Tools in your site and verify this then very quick your site will index.

Google normally takes 4-5 days in indexing a website after you have submitted your website URL to Google webmaster.

I find the same, also any new web pages I create for an existing site take about the same to be indexed.

4 -5 days is not unreasonable and as mentioned above, submit a sitemap and use Google Webmaster tools, very handy for analysing a new website domain.

Be aware that typically Google take a snapshot when you first publish your site and give it a honeymoon listing. After a while (a few weeks) it does a more complete job and your true rank is then determined. This rank is quite often lower.

    Hi,
There is no specific time, it can crawl any time. So, if it takes long time then you can submit your website in Google and some other directories to make it easily available for the crawler.

I ve submitted to quite a few directories ok.....the site is starting to show up in google now, but i would have nearly the whole name typed and then it would come up. What i find happening to now is, the name of the site is two words combined with no break, when i type in the first word, leave a space, then type in the first letter of the second word, it pops up straight away, first in the drop down. I wonder does google recognize the name as two separate words or something? anyway, its starting to surface now.

Sometimes Google would parse a space - ie ignore it - but it very much depends on you site name as it mist also be a two word keyword used in other areas.
If you are on here looking for that type of advice - I'd suggest that you get signed up to google webmaster tools - that would have saved you a few keystrokes.
You should also cast an eye over your site structure for dodgy links and page speeds and usability - these are in you control.

I've found that creating an XML sitemap and uploading it to webmaster tools has sped up the indexing process a few times.
