Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

''Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has announced that he is resigning from Fianna Fáil - just days before the party's National Executive meets to consider expelling him.''

    Good riddance.

Indeed but I mean If I commit massive tax evasion and am massivley corrupt I cant just resign from my job and expect everything to be ok. Is the law in this country a bit slow?

I wonder if they can take his pension of him. He should not get away with everything and I don't think he will.

Sorry I wasnt getting at you with that post. I apologise if it came across that way. Yes I agree but theres enough reason to launch a criminal investigation against him.

It's ok did not think you were :)

There is but it would actually make me more than a little happy to see his pension taken from him, sad I know but he is so smug.

What a god damn fcuking pri(k. He won't give us a small bit of satisfaction of seeing him ousted from his party. Not that it will mean much now after the damage he did to this country and not that it's enough justice.

All of FF should resign from politics, not just this ******.

It's typical of Bertie to jump before he is pushed. I know the pension is a small thing but I don't think he should still get it. I agree there are plenty more like him in FF and FG.

Depeche Mode performed a song titled "Just can't get enough" many years ago.

I'm always reminded of it when I see FF hurting, good riddance to you shower of traitors. Looking forward to the extinction of that party.

Good move for him and FF, suits them both, no need to divide the party to push him when hes already jumped.

If a man jumps from a cliff after being warned that if he doesn't, he will be pushed - has he really chosen to jump?

What will happen to his St.Lukes office? Will he get to keep it or will it be taken from him?

I hope that isn't suggesting that Garda dirt is more acceptable than politician's dirt?

After FF, the political Establishment, the 'Golden Circle', the Catholic Church, the bankers - all found out but rarely punished - we must out one of the key pillars and facilitators crime and corruption.

The key to the Establishment's impunity down the years is the Garda.

Interwoven into the very fabric of the corrupt culture of the Establishment of the Southern State.

    So far - the untouchables.

    Let's start touching them :D

Hondasam and I were talking about his state funeral. Off course he's not going to starve when's dead - he'll be dead. He has millionaire daughters. Let them pay for his funeral. Giving that man a state funeral will be giving him too much respect and not only that it will be state funded.

He was in a position to care for this country and all he did was care for his pockets and his mates pockets while sending this country into penury. When he kicks the bucket I do not want him to further drain from us.

No, his pension is due to his time in office, not due to his party affiliation. FF don't pay for his pension or anyone's pension. If they had to the party would be bankrupt in a matter of weeks. And if you think he has to depend on his family you're very much mistaken.

Wretch, may he die roaring for a priest.

He stresses that this is a political decision, and not in any way an admission of wrongdoing.
    LOLZ

    Vindicate his good name !

    DOUBLE LOLZ

have i just walked in to a diseny novel ?

and the fupper still gets his pension paid by us , what a country.

Both himself and the drunk Cowen are costing you the taxpayer over €150,000 a year in pensions:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/1110/1224307311467.html

I'm not sure whether he's still drawing a salary or expenses for any other government positions as well, almost certainly. His garda escort isn't free.

Don't disagree. But it applies to most Southern politicians for the past 40 years.

And the evil still goes on...as we speak...under the name of Enda/Gilmore.

That's actually more serious - because it's current - Bertie is history.

On the contrary. He should definitely receive it...

..once it happens this year.We can make it happen.
I'm sure we could tack on a question to one of the upcoming referenda to make it quasi-legitimate.

His pension is given by the Dail not his party so whoever you are asking doesnt know what they are talking about. Him being expelled from the party will actually have no bearing on anything whatsoever except he wont be getting invited to the Ard Fheis etc

I can't help liking Bertie tbh.

Nice chap, very good with people, far more charismatic and likable then most eejit Irish politicians.

The Tribunal didn't even call him a liar in the legal sense of the word, there is a difference between that and not accepting his account. Also, is there not more important things to be focusing on now at this time? Making him a scapegoat is fun and all that, but the system that he was part of is and was the problem, whatever he did or didn't do you can bet he was not alone.

Thanks for the great work on the Good Friday Agreement (among other things)Bertie, especially the dedication shown after the passing of your mother. People are very rarely black and white, and while I don't believe he is a saint, I won't demonising him either. Not the worst by a long shot.

Some how i think his garda escort may want a pay rise with all the people that want to kill him.

Also i cant beleive it took 15 years to find out.

Also how many solicitors got minted off this so called inquiry ?

    Which advice?

He made an off the cuff remark regarding people who are constant doomsday sayers, he also apologized, he did not tell them to commit suicide did he? he did not advocate it or say it was the right thing to do.

He questioned how people who see the world so negatively go on living, stupid yes, the point he was trying to make is clear however, and there is a slight difference in advocating killing someone and making a brash statement rejecting some analysts ideas.

The analysts in question were correct, the statements they made were widely available publicly, more so due to his stupid remark, why didnt people heed the advice given?

Em, when did I claim Bertie recommended suicide to someone?

Did I not in fact totally refute that claim?

He never told anybody to commit suicide!

Edit- Ah I see you said, anybody, well I can save you some time, you will not be able to find any clip or statement anywhere that has Bertie recommending suicide to someone.

    Eh... I know.

I'm saying that he didn't strictly say they should kill themselves, just that he doesn't understand how they don't.

It's still a despicable and stupid thing to say, but I think kryogen is arguing that that distinction is important, and that despite the remark and all evidence to the contrary, Bertie is "a nice chap."
