I got an invitation by post in Lucan this morning. As hada says, it simply says "press the ON DEMAND button" but doesn't give any details of what to expect or what is offered.

When my year contract is up I may take another look at UPC.

With On Demand, catch up Tv and the new Horizon box in Q 3 I'd say there'll be significant migration to UPC. At the very least it'll be fascinating to see what happens.

Just got an invitation style letter in the post saying that I am invited to the opening of the UPC on demand this Friday. All I have to do is "press the ON DEMAND button"....also gave a 5euro voucher (when you spend 25 euro or more) for Four Star Pizza!

I guess if you receive the aforementioned "invitation", it means you'll be one of the lucky 1/3. I'm in D4 by the way!

    Typical D4 bias! ;-)

Got that letter in D18 also, there was a crappy €5 off pizza voucher when you spend more than 25. WOW like I don't receive better vouchers in the door every so often.

i agree, who knows what will happen.Sky Atlantic might not be as valuable here as it once was if there is a migration of Sky customers to UPC, so Sky might be willing to let UPC add it to their package,at least that what im hoping

I hate having to wait til August for On Demand,i have a feeling though that it will be available to the rest of Ireland before the date that they said.

Same letter here in D6 ..

It also says to visit Channel 119 to find out more, but 119 is not active on my box yet .. I guess that will be the preview channel for on demand movies etc ..

Got the leaflet in D10. Nothing working yet though. Does anyone know will it be active throughout the house. I've 5 separate boxes, 2HD ones.

What a tacky way to launch this service, a €5 off an order of €25 or more from four star pizza. Really it's a massive marketing mess up. The voucher devalues the service and well, appears to only promote a pizza company. I can't see many (1) reading it and know it's about on-demand or (2) availing of that offer.

I did ask UPC about it on Twitter, go the following response: http://twitter.com/PatrickMooney/status/205605735172816897/photo/1

Marketing aside, I'm wondering about the state of channel 119. Like many, I was hoping for a natural return of More4+1, not another UPC info lite channel.

I got to play with this for a while last night at my cousins in Dublin and in my opinion,it's just awesome,it blows sky out of the water.
Watched platoon via mgm on demand on it.Perfect quality.
One criticism so far,the rte player selection is a few days out of date but I'm sure they'll fix that.

Direct marketing is only one facet. It's already got huge coverage in the media and on the social networks. I assume Tv ads next. Handled well so far IMO.

You need a hdmi cable to view HD. Is your Tv HD and does your box have a hdmi socket?

It's a pity in all the 'huge coverage' they left out which areas are going to be live this Friday

I know letters were getting delivered today but surely a list with the press release would have been a better way of doing it? Or maybe an email to those who are getting it?

They said Dublin homes, and gave areas that weren't included ("Swords/Malahide")

Why are people presuming other areas will miss out?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,687 ✭✭✭✭jack presley

Because they said one third of homes in Dublin will get it. Whether that's a third of homes with UPC or a third of every house in Dublin, that wasn't clear

Not too sure about this. Content is king and Sky still have Atlantic, their HD sports channels and HD movie channels.

A fair point. Not too sure in this age of torrents that "Atlantic" is all that much of an asset. For instance the crowd Game Of Thrones is aimed at would probably be tech savvy enough to know how to watch it "elsewhere".
UPC will also be showing the latest HD movies BEFORE Sky gets them with the On Demand service. So that leaves Sport. Football in HD will probably be Sky's only calling card by the end of the year.
But to go back to your point -- content will be the important thing.

In Inchicore. I've had it since last Friday. All week they've been adding more content, especially to the movies. That said it's still VERY limited. If the movie section does get extensive I will never set foot in a video shop again.

Also, I'm awful at paying my UPC bill, so it's nice to see they don't discriminate as to who gets this trial.

I am happy, not bothered about HD Skysports as I'm not a sub (for this yet) I find it great having ESPN HD, SENTANTA HD, RTE2 HD, EUROSPORT and BBC HD. This will ensure I see a fair bit of sport in HD, from UFC, Euro 2012, Olympics and a lot more. The UFC tv deal in Aug could change my opinion though.

For Skysports I use LOF so happy enough with that solution. UPC Contract is over in Sept if this content is decent enough they'll prob keep me as a tv sub.

    Hi Jack presley

Just to clarify - one third of all homes in Dublin will get On Demand instantly that’s over 160,000 homes with the correct UPC Set Top Box from tomorrow.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Jason,

Is the data downloaded via the streaming service counted as broadband traffic in relation to the 500GB cap?

If you Press the "On Demand" button on your NTL remote and it gives this message http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=78344075&postcount=21 it should work. If nothing happens after a few seconds, I doubt those boxes will work for the new service

Jason does seem to be confirming there that it's 1/3 of all homes in Dublin and not just UPC homes. I'm taking that this is the number of compatible homes in Dublin. In which case everybody with compatible boxes in Dublin may get it tomorrow except Swords and Malahide. I live in Monkstown in South Dublin. I have a Digital + Box and a Digital + HD box. I didn't receive a letter and had thought that maybe I'll have to wait till July. But maybe I won't. We'll see in the morning.

No mine does not do that

But theres an ondemand button on my remote

So this service must be only for people with the HD and the rewind/forward boxes I have cable max with the standard box that they gave out since 2005 I doubt this box will be capable o well

My ondemand has changed to a new message. I can't read it all as the text rolls off the screen to the right. It states the service is not available and to check UPC.ie for more information. Location is city centre, Dublin 8. I know HD isn't here yet. Perhaps you need HD service to get it? I did get the pizza notice. Tomorrow will tell.

Jason, what an amateurish way to announce a new service!! U would think UPC would have had a big lead up to this to get the people who don't have the correct set top box to change over( and earn UPC more money), the announcements over the last few days don't make sense, whoever is in charge of marketing should get the boot!

    Hi biggebruv

The majority of our set top boxes are capable of receiving the ON Demand functionality.

If however, your box isn't compatible, we would be happy to swap it out for you.

One easy way is to self install, which costs a once off fee of just €30 – if however, you need some help – it will cost a once off fee of €45 to get a technician out to provide you with this assistance.

    Regards
