Just let the balance run down on the existing credit after this months free usage is up.
When the balance starts to get low again, you can top up by 20 bucks to activate the free texts again.

Just remember O2 state that this can take 24 to 48 hours, so make sure he has enough credit for 1 or 2 days of texts when you top up

Yeah, thats what I used to do, €20, 30 days free, 3-5 days paid, top up and away you go again.
