Yes, I thought he was one of the more unfortunate guys to not get a 6N medal for everything he'd done to help turn Ireland into a consistently winning team.

Still, as you said - a great career to look back on.

And that try against England in 2006 was superb

possibly my favourite irish try ever england had just won the world cup and thought they were the biz was a huge win for us i think a lot of players have a picture that you remember them by for me him stretching for the line at the end is his

What was incredible about that try is that Horgan prepared himself early to have the ball in his right hand knowing he'd be tackled by Moody. Thank God he was born with hands like shovels. Still amazing how he takes the hit, holds the ball at full stretch and gets such a solid grounding on the ball.

He togged out pretty large. You'd see him around city centre and he looks quite slim in casuals.

That was a couole of years after the world cup. You might be thinking about girves try in 2004.

right you are no its that try that i remember. there must have been something important about the game because i remember being on the edge of my seat as if it was a final. perhaps England just still had martin Johnson's arrogance at that stage and i just really wanted us to beat them:D

I was lucky enough to be at Twickers for that game where we beat them as the current world champs. Fantastic day. I didn't even have a ticket until about an hour before kickoff.

Beating England in Twickenham is a big occasion for pretty much every team in the world. We've just been a bit spoiled over the last decade where we've strung together a lot of wins.

That try against Scarlets is how I will always remember Shaggy - going like a train - an awesome sight. One of the greats! :D

Best of luck to Shaggy, was a pleasure watching him play for province and country over the last decade. Hope he gets a nice insurance payout for having to retire early, and hope to see him continue as a pundit on RTE

Shaggy hope you get to see this thread.....loads of man love.....your a top fella......gave loads of enjoyment to us.......totally committed player.......besta luck in your future.

  • Try he scored for Leinster when he carried the ball ON his back through the oncoming defenders was one of my favourites.

Might have been a huge physical imposing guy, but had fantastic hands and a great brain. His awareness of those around him was a massive attribute.

Be sure to tell him there's plenty of man-love here on boards for him! :D

    He was in flying form.
Is going to get his sis to sign a DVD set of her BBC comedy series, 'Pulling', for me.

We were too busy to show him the thread here.

Absolutely gutted he had to go out this way. If ever there was a player who deserved a standing ovation at his home ground, Shaggy was the one.

I hope his future is as bright as his past. Good luck Shaggy!

I wonder will they send him out before the Cardiff game to let the fans show their appreciation for him? Would be a nice touch and richly deserved for a great servant to Irish rugby.

I knew it was coming for a while but still gutted for him.

    Thanks for the memories.

Doesn't strike me as the sort of player that would need or want a big send off but it's a shame he didn't get to play one last time and call it quits on his own term. I hope he holds off on punditry for a few years so his playing colleagues can retire and he won't be restricted like he was on RTE during this campaign.

Hell of a career, was never a favoured player of mine (not that I hate him) but have huge admiration to the effort he gave for Leinster after being dropped by Ireland, no sulking, no airs and graces, put his head down and got on with it.

Its a real shame he had to retire like this but I guess its been coming a while. Always one of my favourite players, wish him all the best in the future.

Great player, will be sad to see him gone, what an inspired decision it turned out to be to switch him and D'arcy - albeit a forced experiment but didnt it turn out well all those years ago?
Shockingly treated by Kidney, its a shame he never won the grand slam. Him and Hickie - the two greatest wingers for Ireland.
Also gave most Irish sports fans one of the greatest memories with that catch - that big huge beautiful catch.
    Thanks very much Shaggy

People often talk about Shaggy having a great Lions tour in 2005 off the bench. Just wondering why he never got a start even in the dead rubber third test?
