Major Irish banks - having harvested the population via taxes & bailouts - are now finding that carcass getting near the bone, are turning their attention to robbing people more directly in the form of fees for this and that.

Isn't it about time the credit unions stepped up to the mark and offered a less parasitic form of banking. For example Bishopstown CU (http://www.bishopstowncu.ie/) offers a MasterCard, usable wordwide, which is more than BOI and AIB offer with their pathetic Laser card. Any more CU's offering such services?

Just think, small local banking, serving the communities and businesses in which they operate instead of dysfunctional monoliths.

An issue with this is that current accounts are generally loss making products for the banks and the money is made on "upselling" loans and other credit products. The CU and members want loss making products with them. They are under significant pressure as it is at present to maintain reserve levels and some have had very bad lending conditions in the past and present to be honest.

That being said I think it would be a good area to be looked at by credit unions. if they can make it work why not.
