Sorry I should made my post clearer , I don't like team speak, I rather the chat during a game on the console eg cod. I know you may meet a lot more dickheads but you can still come across grand folk. For example I met a Dutch lad while playing black ops on the ps3 and he's on my friends lst now

Well look at it this way:

I played wow and met few lads, we played more and were in same guild. Turned out they were from northend Ireland and a few from England. We are on ventrilo all the time, basicly you turn on pc and turn on ventrilo. We are friends over 5 years now and each year we take holidays and all gather up in north for a week or two for total nerding-out! LAN party, movies, steak houses, pubs, paint ball, house parties etc.in those years we played and quited wow so many times, but we were still on vent.
The best thing is that you don't need to play, but you still socialise and have a good crack all the time. Even lads from boards that we play BF3 on craggy island. It's a good crack on team speak.

Depends on the server headshot. Some community public servers have their own teamspeak server while others use ingame/textchat. The "social" side on PC is awesome once you put some effort in and join some teamspeak/vent channels. Maybe join a clan or something ? Playing on your own is mega boring after a while.

saying that.. it was kinda depressing when i finally got a PC again, ready to pwn some noobs like old times... only to find nearly everyone i used to play with had quit playing /sadface

Best thing about PC gaming is finding a good dedicated server and getting to know the guys on it. Makes a big change from the random mongs on consoles.
