Clare Daly will be speaking about the houshold tax tonight @8pm in Greystones Rugby Club.

With just 2 days to the deadline over 1 million people (1,100,00 I think!) have still not registered. If you're still on the fence about paying it, or are supporting and taking part in the boycott, sure come along and hear what there is being said, and ask a question or two if you're not sure about something.

    Cheers!

Populist nonsense if you ask me

It's exactly this kind of thing that won a Fianna fail landslide in 1977 and then bankrupt the country.

It's laughable that socialists would oppose a property tax. In every other European country they support them.

    It's nothing but populism.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I think their beef is that it is a flat tax and does not take into account a persons ability to pay.

The Socialist party in Greystones... we have hit an all time low.

what about council housing being exempt? lots of people living in council CAN afford to pay but dont have to and people living in private housing with massive bills still have to pay... and cant afford to ...
    only in Ireland.

I paid mine in January... didn’t really have the money for it... but cut back in other areas to pay for it.... i honestly can’t see what all the fuss is about... there are lots of country with “council tax” etc...

People's objections to the Tax are considered, real and varied.
The government needs to think again and not be so f'ing lazy this time.

So tired of hearing this argument. Other countries in Europe don't have the USC to force their citizens into paying off German and French bank debts.. No point comparing apples and oranges.

Anyway back OT did anyone go down ? We're there many there ?

@Swanner: Yeah there were about 50 people there, not as big as some other events in the country but it was a good turn out for Greystones! Lots of people joined the campaign etc, good Q&A session, all in all worth the effort (and sorry for taking the p!ss with all the posters around the town lately, they are coming down on sunday.... and yes, we had a permit ;) )

Lads, I keep hearing this thing that socialists should support a property tax. The household charge is a flat tax that does not take into account any ability to pay, so rich and poor pay alike. That's not something that any socialist could support. As as to the arguement that a more fairer system is coming down the line after registration and the household tax merges into a property tax etc., well yes from the looks of things the wealthy would pay more, but the poor would stilll pay more aswell, just not as much!! That kinda get's the crux of the issue, that the €100 charge isn't the main issue, it's what's coming down the line in the next 2-3 years as once you've registered, they've got you by the b*lls and can raise it as much as they want.

An economist from the ERSI has said that for it to be worth the government's time and effort we are looking at combined property and water taxes of €1300 per annum in 2-3 years (I reckon they wont get to that height for a greater number of years if at all, however the 2009 Commission on Taxation suggested that houses valued between €150,000 and €300,000 should be levied with a property tax of €563... add a water tax onto that and you're looking at a hefty figure).

@cocker5 : I don't know who you know in council houses, but I don't know anyone who would be able to afford the full property/water taxes (which is what this is really about). And the idea that someone who cries on behalf of middle-income households yet whose first response is to point the finger at those poorer than them while there are poeple at the top making a killing is bizarre.

I actually live in a council house, and before anyone pull's me up and proclaims "how dare he call on others to boycott when he's excempt!!", there's a word called "solidarity" that I take to heart, and all the work I'm putting into this campaign is in support of friends of mine who are engaged in the boycott.

I'm not a member or supporter of the SP, but yeah good point, nice roll-eyes.

This is exactly the point, the dogs on the street know it isn't going to stay at €100, can you afford more?

Anyway look, I've got a feeling this thread is about to be ultra-locked, so here's an FAQ and I'll leave it at that ( http://nohouseholdtax.org/your-questions-answered/ )

    Till next time,

Jesus, didn't mean to rant at first but it's evolved into a monster!

Any chance you can take down the posters that you have posted all over the town, now that the meeting is over? There are still signs for a meeting that you had on the 1st of march hangin up too.
