I am very clueless when it comes to this so I decided to post here. I am looking for any ideas for best broadband package for gaming. ( hubby loves his x box live). Am based in Carrick-on-Shannon. What is the most basic package I can get to ensure ok play on x box?- I would like to do away with landline if possible.
I am currently with eircom but contract due up for renewal. Thanks

For decent gaming a landline is usually the thing you need most, if you can't get UPC stick to the landline. Other types of connection (mobile, wimax, satellite) tend to have high latency which will make the game freeze or laggy.

    landline/cable/upc are the best really

3g/mobile/wimax will be inconsistent and make stuff laggy

Fixed wireless is teh best option to get away with the landline really, not sure which service is best for there but if the landline has to go fixed wireless is the stuff ya want.. satellite broadband won't cut the cheese for xbox

While that is mostly true a good fixed wireless installation can be better than DSL for latency. But satellite and mobile are crap are really not worth investigating for any sort of gaming...

thinking of moving from my DSL to www.carnsorebroadband.com

Are you saying they will be worse for gaming?

They are a fixed wireless provider so therefore should be as good as DSL or perhaps better.

Can be are the words you need to emphasise there. You could also say that a family car can be faster than a racing car provided that the family car is well tuned and the racing car is in a bad state of disrepair. The potential for a fixed line connection is better than a fixed wireless connection as is the average.

Absolute nonsense. Gaming doesn't need speed, it needs low latency. Decent fireless will have half the latency of any Dsl connection. This is my mams fixed wireless connection at present (6.00 on a friday eve)

and this is my own dsl connection

That's what I said already, I never mentioned speed. I get between 4 and 8 on Vodafone @ Home, I'm less than 100 meters from the exchange :)

Please do, I'd love to see those 4-8ms to boards.ie on Dsl
cos I know it's not possible

I tell you what, I'll let you win if you can do better than double my mams 11ms average off peak. Show me a sub 22ms ping to boards on your Dsl connection.

I've never bothered to ping a site, I always just use pingtest.net, i'll have to find the cables later too, I'm on wifi now.

    Why?

    Why?

Because anyone who knows anything about networking does their pings from command line and takes the results from pingtest.net and speedtest.net with a pinch of salt. It's not a definitive result.

Neither is a result from a site, the site could be having any sort of problem. I just prefer a service set up purposefully for this service and that has a GUI over cmd line tests.

OK, we can disregard all your posts now

Thanks for that. My ping is 47 at the mo and 2.4 mb down 0.3 mb up with Vodafone at home and less than 40 metres from the exchange

I'd say the fixed wireless will be better than that

Not all DSL is poor. It can be excellent for gaming. My old 3mb connection got between 12ms and 14ms when pinging boards. It just depends on your line and location and how close you are to the exchange.

The other lad was stupid suggesting using speedtest.net as a reliable idea of ping. However it is possible to have an excellent gaming experience on DSL.
