How does it work for double honours? I am studying Law and French and I am just wondering if it would be possible to move 30% from French in 2nd year to French in 3td year.. can I do that?

Afaik it does it automatically depending on which is better but it can only take the overall grade from the year.

Just did. I'm a little bit terrified that somehow I'll have to fork out!

I got a mail like that before, despite not having fees that year. It's alright, it'll work itself out in the long run. You may have to provide a letter or something, but they're not going to kick you out or anything. Chances are high that it's an automated thing and not a case of someone deciding you owe them cash. Just a computer thing.

I just got one of those emails a few hours after the email confirming the second half of my payment and it says €0 due on the student web services, the troll that is Maynooth IT strikes again.

You can't pick and choose which grades it takes. It'll only take the overall (ie. Both subjects) from the year and it'll only mix the two years if that'll give you a better overall grade.

I don't think that made anymore sense did it? :-D

Just changing modules there for next semester. Took quite a while to find where they hid the student services stuff. I cannot stand the new site look. It's a complete design mess in my opinion. Utter rubbish.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 7,849 Mod ✭✭✭✭suitcasepink

Are you able to change modules yourself? I thought you had to go to the registration office or something.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

No, with modules within a course you can do it yourself online, if your course allows it. A lot of courses don't let you until second year though. I think you only have to do it in the Records office when it's an entire subject you're switching out of, like English into History or something.

Round this time next year you should have the option to change any electives you might have chosen in September next. Again, if your course allows for it.

You can change them online here (need to login): https://studentweb.nuim.ie/

There is some instructions here on how to change: http://records.nuim.ie/RegistrationAmendmentsGuide.htm

An email I have received from NUIM Socialist Soc:
    Jan 29 at 9:47 PM
NUIM Socialist Soc or its members have never, ever engaged in hate speech. We do NOT "actively promote discrimination". You provide no evidence for these accusations.

Arguing that capitalism massively encourages sexism is not hate speech. Using disease as an analogy to how capitalism creates many serious social problems is not hate speech, by any stretch of the imagination.

How dare you make these accusations. You expect us to take the time and energy to explain certain aspects of our politics to you, but you repeatedly insult and condemn us. You call us "crazy and extreme" and "a disgrace to socialists", compare us to the Catholic church, and claim that we promote a discrimination that is worse than sexism. All this without telling us who our supposed hate speech is directed at or who we supposedly encourage discrimination against.

The only reason I have taken the time to reply to your extremely hostile e-mail and your totally baseless accusations is to advise you for your own sake never to send such an e-mail to anyone again, and never, ever to make such ridiculous accusations again about anyone. As requested I have removed you from our e-mail list.

I am glad that they set me straight, I'm sorry if I thought saying "capitalism = sexism" or "We need to work to cure the capitalist disease from Maynooth" is discrimination. Are these people actually serious?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,775 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

I don't think those things qualify as hate speech personally. That email is pretty heavy handed however.

I think that labelling anyone who disagrees with certain economic policies as ill is hate speech. I think the same for labelling all capitalists as sexist. Do you strongly oppose the idea of being rewarded for hard work, and earning more than other people for doing a better job? If you don't oppose it socialist soc says you are both sexist and diseased, IMO that's hate speech.

I need to clarify as well, that while in the email Socialist soc claims they said capitalism encourages sexism, what they actually said is all capitalists are sexist, and that is it not possible to not be sexist if you are capitalist.

They also did not use a disease analogy, they claimed that their goal was the cure the people of maynooth of their disease (being anything other than socialist).

Any chance that we could see the original email? While I don't agree with the attitude of that response and would definitely not be a socialist I think it'd be worth seeing the greater context.

I ask because the society gives what appear to be direct quotes which don't appear in the email of yours that they respond to

Looking at it now that can't be all I sent, I had a good old rant at them, that's all they quoted in the reply, I don't have any of the rest, just stuff sent back and forth today about data protection violations.

If anyone from their side is reading this feel free to post it, I've no problem standing up for whatever I said.
