For some reason I always thought that NUIM was in 3rd place behind Trinity and UCD rankings wise... I have just found out that we are ranked as the lowest University in Ireland. Feel kinda disappointed :(

    As a general observation:

    1. I am not a mod, and despise backseat modding.

    2. We should probably halt the discussion of the Socialist Party in this thread, or take it to a different thread. In my experience, political discussion of this nature completely hijacks threads and makes them unbearable for most people.

    3. If a new thread is started on this, please let me know so I can book some time off work.

    Just my 2c.

You can't pick and choose which grades it takes. It'll only take the overall (ie. Both subjects) from the year and it'll only mix the two years if that'll give you a better overall grade.

I don't think that made anymore sense did it? :-D

Im really disappointed now :( my chances of getting 2.1 in french are gone just because I f****d up law last year :/

It's utterly meaningless in my opinion. The department matters. Your supervisor matters. University as a whole, who cares? The media, that's all. You could go to TCD and have a supervisor who studied more or less the same subject area as twenty other people in the country, or NUIM and have a supervisor who is a world expert and cited in every relevant bibliography. In that case... the university doesn't matter a damn.

I suppose it depends on what you're after. But the days are gone or almost gone when a basic degree was enough to get a really good job. MAs are becoming more common. A cousin with a PhD recently ended up in Intel and in her department there is not one single person with less than an MA or MSc. The university ranking doesn't matter. What matters is the quality of your degree. A 1st from NUIM is always going to be better than a 2.2 from TCD.

The only way it'll matter is if the person interviewing you went to the same place, and invariably did a different course, but at least you have something else to talk about for a few minutes. When I left school you could get a good job with just your Leaving Cert. After a bunch of years it started being that a degree was pretty much required. But it wasn't necessarily relevant. I've known people hired in IT companies for engineering positions with History degrees. The point about a degree, any degree, is that it shows you can dedicate yourself to something for three or four years and give it your best. Projects in all sorts of companies often last multiple years. That's why it's important to work hard throughout college. There are sods like me who'll ask for transcripts in an interview to see if you're a consistently hard worker, or someone who only really puts in the work when it's crunch time (i.e. degree year).

In very few cases will the university actually matter a damn. Just work hard, do your best, and it'll be fine.

I've decided to hang up the banhammer and rejoin the ranks of Registered Users. Just too busy with IRL stuff at the minute. I'll still be sticking around as mod until a new one appears. And I'll still be posting in here when I'm procrastinating :P

Thanks to all of you for being generally great and a special thanks to Thwip for being a fantastic co-mod.

    Wondering the same myself

Didn't see anything about it myself but I'm assuming it was some sort of "black monday" type thing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 587 ✭✭✭Planemo

    This I think?

But as far as I can see, it's just a page set up to get loads of people to go to the SU bar/Mantra on Monday (which will happen anyway), doesn't claim to be with the SU or running a promotion so I don't see what the problem is?

EDIT: Just saw the email from security. I know them and the SU probably don't want a repeat of 'Messy Monday' last week but they're fools if they think massive amounts of students aren't going to go out on the first day back.

I just opened a giant tin of chocolate covered kimberly mikado biscuits, and all I could think was 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer'. Biscuits: the cause of and solution to all of my problems.

It is indeed , with a language school in Edinburgh. It's just a summer thing so I don't have to be as poor next college year hopefully :D

Edinburgh is a beautiful city. What language do you hope to teach? Have you been there before?

It is indeed, castle's pretty cool ! I've been there for a day trip before when I was staying near Inverness a few years ago.

I wont be teaching as such , more co-ordinating activities / trips / general entertainment, showing new students around the city and reception type stuff.

It's all in English , the school is like the ones here that Spanish/French/Italian/Chinese people come to learn English for the summer.

They've an office/school in Dublin too so I'm hoping that if I don't get Edinborough that I'll get Dublin and then save even more money (minus the adventure) ! :D

Good luck with the interview! Watch out though, I'd say 90% of the times I used skype on campus (which was pretty regular at one stage cause a friend of mine was on erasmus in France), the calls were dropped due to the sh1tty internet. I'd maybe see if you could change it to a time where you would be at home, or skip your class if possible - just to be on the safe side.
