    Hi manutd83
eircom intends to launch a range of entertainment services over fibre including television via a customer’s broadband connection (IPTV), video on demand, catch up TV and social media via TV. This is scheduled for this year. I do not have more information at this time. Eircom is profitable on a day to day basis and in the past two years have made significant advances in the way we operate. Fibre and IPtv are a part of our plans for future services and we hope to be able to post more on this soon.

Eircom is pretty profitable from day to day. The problem is having enough profit to

    1. pay the stupendous debt from the Tony O Reilly and George Soros days plus the Australian bankers topup as well as
    2. Invest in the network.

If 2. is not addressed as a matter of extreme urgency then the company will be back in examinership again by 2016 latest and likely by 2015. Lack of investment has led to people abandoning eircom in droves...why pay €50 a month for dialup or 1mbit DSL when a crap mobile service will give you a better experience for €20 a month.

eircom does not need loans to invest, it generates all the cash it requires by itself.

Sadly there are no plans to invest in rural and small town areas, only in larger towns with a minimum population of 5000 persons and in cities....because that is where UPC are. These are eircoms investment targets. Meanwhile the people of Kilrickle and St Johnston and many other rural communities still don't have the basic ADSL that eircom promised them 5 years ago this week. :(

According to the last census there there are just over 1m households in towns, the rest....around 600.000 households....are rural or village dwellers.

    Hi manutd83,

Appreciated, and thanks for posting on the Boards Forum.

I would be optimistic and confident that eircom's pricing will be competitive and that IPTV & other services will offer tremendous benefit to customers. This is on top of all the existing value added services : eircom SportsHub, StudyHub, WiFiHub & MusicHub.

    Watch this space -

    Regards,
    Ant....Lufc92 :)

eircom is not allowed to compete take the shackles off and see prices really fall. Phone and broadband prices in the uk are a fraction of what they cost here for instance any time calls national and 25 meg broadband 16 pounds per month. UPC and eircom have become a duopoly lets have some real competition

eircom CHOSE to charge the highest line rental in the WORLD for the last 10 years and lost lots of customers to crappy mobile 'broadband' services who do not charge line rental..

YOU tell me what is 'competitive' about that willya! :(

eircom is obliged to give upc access to its network for 1 cent per line remember there is only one network. eircom is not permitted to lower its prices and if it does it must offer the competition the same product at lower price. The only point I am making is that now that the network is open its time to allow competition. the esb was allowed to compete when it opened its network if you could call it competition. Just allow BT to run the irish network that would work
