IIRC some posters used a convo thread to troll other forums. Admins lost the rag, started banning and deleted the thread. Poker mods stepped down in protest and then it really escalated

And we all laughed and laughed and laughed.

Yep! There was way too much crazy and nasty for my liking.

I have an alt account that I use for just one forum, other than that I really don't see the appeal of boards anymore at all.

My current account was set up in 2005, but I've been lurking and posting here since 2002 at least. I abandoned my original account for privacy reasons. It's been so long that I'm not even sure what the username was now.

I probably post more now then ever. Although my posting is mostly restricted to the same few forums. It wasn't always that way. I think as the site as grown over the years individual forums have developed their own communities, where as there was a time when it felt like the whole site was one big community. I guess it still, but it's become much more fragmented.

I think most of the older posters who have gone away have done so because they got a life and/or became bored with the place. I may do the same one day as well.

After Hours used to be my fav forum but I think the introduction of the ''thanks'' button has messed things up.
Suddenly everyone wants to be the funnyman and many threads just descend into total sh*te because of it.

Nah that was there before thanks.
It's the increase in popularity of the forum that has caused this. There's a clamour to be the first replier to a thread now. Would still be there if thanks wasn't around.

What happened to Thaeds, I remember she changed her username but then disappeared off the radar!

She deleted/closed her account, even PMs to & from her have disappeared (although if I remember right she was not the only recipient of them so probably not the best deletion script there really).
A number of people I used to regularly get into discussions with have also done so, as such a fair portion of the people who I genuinely respected on the site are now gone so I don't particularly feel motivated to post much, just stick to browsing for interesting info.

As to the why, at a simple guess they're sick of the trolls and other BS that's grown ever more commonplace.

It was better before in that there was a far lower quotient of braindead/knuckledragging/lunatic, but it's better now IMO in the sense that it's more open and inclusive, less cliquey and esoteric.
I agree, though the cliques didn't tend to bother me too much since they weren't as pervasive (IMO) as the "braindead/knuckledragging/lunatic" element now seems to be.

Though to be honest I've found it to be the case with most forums, such that I've withdrawn from nearly all of them, sure it means leaving folks behind and sometimes a glut of PMs if I do return but I find I just have to take regular breaks from the less attractive element of humanity that tends to dominate the online world.

I think it started to change subtly around a couple years ago. Not because of Daft coming in either. That's been a good thing IMHO. I'd pin a lot of it to the whole "Pokergate" incident. It got real serious real quick and a large community at the time upped sticks and walked. That bad/unsettling/WTF feeling trickled around the place. Lines were drawn etc. Add in a wider audience and the oft necessary officialdom/play it safe stuff that comes with a business that's employing folks made it bigger, but more fractured I suppose? Those changes are going to be odd for a lot of longer term posters unless you kinda change with it.

Pokergate, that passed me by... What happened there?

Happened just before you signed up? My memory's ****e so don't take that to the bank. :) Water under the bridge and all that. One of those "growing pains" I suppose you could describe it, but there was a before and after vibe to it IMH anyway. Compared to other stuff that might have gone a bit pete tong(as things will) before or since.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Or its introduction exposed the fact that the many of the "hilarious' old guard were not actually found funny by the average user despite knowing the right people.

While I rarely saw eye to eye with WWM and vice versa, him not being around is the sites loss IMHO. No subterfuge with the guy. You knew where he/you stood. That's rare enough IME. Plus he could surprise and was not boring. Just my take though. Amp I'd little experience of TBH so can't really offer a take on the chap.

TBH there's a fair few old schoolers who threw the rattle out of the pram and left that I would never miss, basically trenchcoats who couldn't handle the influx of norms bringing about the loss of clique powah, it was just like real life all over again, I guess.

Hadn't realised monkeyfudge had stopped posting... surprised to see the man behind the original boardscasts stepping back from the site.

Would also miss WhiteWashMan, guy once gave me the kick in the arse I needed to have a chat with a former boss that got me a five grand raise. His wife minesajackdaniels was a great poster too, used to love her blog, genuinely a great writer.

Know some of the others mentioned on here are still posting but under new handles as they wanted to reclaim their anonymity from some of the posters on here. Can definitely understand it for some of the more high-profile posters.

Personally, I've found I spend less time in the general forums and more in the specialist forums of my hobbies.

Yes because spelling and punctuation have always been what makes for great conversation and debate on Boards.

I genuinely hate this attitude! Personally I cant spell because of dyslexia and because of this I never liked English as a subject, my punctuation is probably not the best as a result. But if people can understand what I am trying to say and recognise that I have just misspelled a word or two who cares that there are a couple of punctuation or spelling mistakes.

It’s the idea that someone is trying to get across in their post that is the important thing and makes the post interesting or not. As long as I can understand the idea I don’t care if the odd word is wrong, or they haven’t used a comma in the correct place.

I’ve been here a while and spelling is the least of the things that I think has gotten worse here. The main thing that I think has gotten bad is the TLDR attitude of a lot of posters. I mean what is the point of posting on a mainly text based bulletin board if your not going to read something because it has more then two lines in it.

Not as angry as the little mad face looks ;) so don’t go disappearing again. It’s just spelling Nazi’s piss me off as they seldom contribute anything to discussions other then telling someone they spelt a word wrong. It really doesn’t help anyone in any way.

I've been around since the start, but signed up in 01. I have watched the scandals, seen people come and go, boards memes and huge arguments.

The site has grown, I am older but I still visit every day. Can't say that I have made any impact but, the prolific new posters I tend to ignore.

There are so many of the Facebook generation that have messed up the signal to noise that I confine myself to my subbed forums. I'll post if I think it helps, but usually by the time you have posted and checked on another tab, you are 10 posts behind.

Anyway I miss the call of "AMP TEST" among other things.

Boards has helped me in so many ways as a basic lurker. My join date or my postcount is not a reflection of me or Boards as a whole.

Stay away from the crap and it is as good as I remember, wander into some thread of kids arguing about how something sucks and forget it.

Stop typing ffs. A lurker never involves themselves in a huge useless thread ;(

Boards is a great place, but has a few more dark alleys than it once had.

    Thank god for subbed forums.
