Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Will a 12v 28 amp battery jump start an MF 135. She doesn't need much, we started her off the ould lads corolla last time and she turned first try but can't get van near tractor where she is :pac:

One way to know... try it!!

Seems a bit small tbh but with the weather not being overly cold, you might be lucky.

Have a bigger one I use for the sprayer, just haven't charged it over the Winter as I mislaid my charger, which I coincidentally found today!

Reason I asked about the 28amp is that I was in Aldi/Lidl earlier and saw power pack/air compressor, so I had a read and they've only a 17.5amp battery in them, but for cars I suppose.

What you're looking at is the capacity, I would think. So it's amp hours rather than amps. Your battery will deliver 28 amps for an hour. The cranking amps is a different thing and arguably more important when starting a tractor from cold.

Let us know how you go on.

only one way to find out:D

as mentioned it's the CCA that counts.. Most tractor batterys are 90 - 130Ah but i have a battery here out of a jeep that is only 46Amp rating but it has serious CCA, can start big tractors from cold once not cranking for more than 20 seconds...

Ambient temperature will make a huge difference, so maybe wait till the early afternoon before trying. Nights are still cold enough these days.

If jump starting a tractor with a car, leave it connected up for 15 mins to charge the tractor bat before starting it, rather than straight away as you would car to car.

Don't go there. Been there, worn the t-shirt, failed to start the vehicle. 'Nuff said.

John, why dont you take out the battery out of the tractor and place it beside the van. Then put your jump leads on to the battery and connect to the van. Start it up and leave it run for 10-15 mins and it will charge up. Then put the battery back into Tractor and away she will go.

Thats what I have to do anyway sometimes.

Just remember to park the tractor in a position so that you can jump start it until you get the problem started.;)

My girlfriends dad gave me the loan of a Powercraft 850W petrol generator [aldi job e100 I think] but it seems a great job but it has a lead and clips on it for charging 12V batteries... Wouldnt this be ideal in John's situation? Anyone else pick up/ experience one of them generators from Aldi?

    depends on the tractor really.

my auld lad's 135 would start on a sniff of power. it's been jumped off a micra in the cold before with zero issues.

I had a ford 2600 that could only be jumped off my twin batteried range rover :(

Another tip is to connect the positive lead onto the starter and the earth onto the chassis rather than directly to the battery.
This avoids any loss due to poor connections or bad leads.
