This post has me confused. First you say it's frustrating when people complain at a joke, but then say you see why people didn't like it
I usually get a cup of tea made for me when I come into work. One day the cup of tea wasn't in my favourite cup. It annoyed me but I had two options - I could audibly bitch and moan about it or I could just get over my momentary annoyance.

tbh that's how I see this. No-ones' account was compromised, no-one was put out in any huge way, the only thing that I can see that happened was that people weren't able to see some pictures.
You also seem to imply that because this is a free service, we are completely at the mercy of the whims of people in the office?
Every year something is done to the site on April Fools'. I wouldn't categorise that as a whim.
Free service or not, standards should be maintained for the users.
Is playing an April Fools joke as has been done every year since I've known boards considered to be standards slipping?
Yes, this was just an April Fools joke. However it was also an unfunny, unoriginal, and inconveniencing joke, thus p1ssing off a sizeable number of the people you should be looking out for. How anyone thought it was a good idea is beyond me
People getting irked at an April Fools' joke? Well cover me in honey and leave me in the woods, I wouldn't have seen that one coming :p

The money you willingly and voluntarily pay you mean?

Are you genuinely hacked off about the April Fools' prank or just looking to pick holes at this point? If it's genuine upset then I'm sure the lads will take it on board.

I am, I couldn't use the site, I couldn't see most things, I couldn't post replies, I couldn't start threads (I wanted to start this thread, but couldn't because of the http://www.boards.ie/gold.php page)

I'm not major pissed off, it's just when I air my grievance over it, y'know, on the Feedback forum, only to be called a 'pussie' and 'bitch' and nothing done about it, it's pretty shitty

Call it what you will, it was directed towards the posters who disagreed with his view point!

    And Giuliana Slimy Spatula's post

Also, everytime I tried to start a thread or post a reply I was getting the error, so yeah, it did affect the site!

    For the better?

Are you honestly telling me that was not abuse? Honestly?

I'm not patronising you Tallon, your last sentence "just sayin" is equivocal to the "sorry... but" apology. What point was there in your post other than to nitpick?

You weren't called a bitch, you were called out for bitching. You weren't personally called a pussy, it was a general sleight made against the detractors that I've already told Frada to reign in. You said the site was 'unusable' and folk were responding to the drama of a statement like that.
    And Frada's post

Are you honestly telling me that was not abuse? Honestly?

I can't say either way, mostly because I know there's history between you both as poster and Mod and I can't make a clear call on it.

Unless you were intentionally denied your favourite cup and refused to see it for hours then this is nowhere near a relatable example.

I don't mean April Fools jokes. I mean in general, are you saying the people in the office can do anything they like to the site and we have SFA we can do about it? I know we're not entitled to it, but for the sake of keeping customers happy we should have some say

I know that this was supposed to be a joke. What I'm saying is that it was so obviously a joke, that it became the needless censoring of pictures. Is it any wonder people got irked by it?

While your comments are factually true, I thinks it's more the intent than splitting hairs on the words and attributing a meaning to them.

If attacking the post in the manner it was attacked, and calling the collective "pussies" is an "arguable" position to be in, and results in a slap on the wrist, well then so be it.

Personally, I think you're setting an example that has no place here, and while I have absolutely nothing against Frada, I would contend that had it been another poster, the response would have been different.

Of course I'm not saying you can't have your say  If that were the case the thread would be closed/ deleted. I'm just responding to the criticism and saying that I'd agree with the sentiment that a little perspective would go a long way.

Fair enough.. Another one I'll just sit out then!

Sorry I didn't find something non funny, not funny, and aired my opinion on it in a forum for giving your opinion.

Funny how I get banned from AH for whether or not I find something funny, yet, the same mod that banned me, come's on here, complaining about people finding something funny or not

    Boggles!

It's arguable that the way Frada phrased it was that it was attacking the post and not the posters i.e. the post was bitching, not that Tallon is a bitch. He also said "you pussies", no-one was directly called anything.

It was an April Fools joke that some people didn't like - it can get more than a little frustrating at times when you see folk complaining extensively about a joke pulled on a service that they get absolutely for free. So the guys wanted a bit of a laugh and it interrupted some posters viewing of certain threads. Is it really worthy of that much complaining? I dunno, I can see why Frada got so exasperated tbh. Especially given that he's a Mod of CVPL and of all the people who it created most disruption for it would be him.

So to answer your question no, personal abuse is not allowed. What Frada said could be argued either way if I'm honest, but given the context of the discussion I'm not going to action anything. Frada, just reign it in a bit though yeah?

To be honest g'em pretty much anything can be argued for or against. If people had come and said, 'you pussies, dis is fúcking shít, not funny at all you pussies' how would it have gone down? In a similar way to the 'joke' it would have gone down like a lead balloon.

While not technically calling anyone in particular a pussy, it would have been infracted of that I've no doubt.

People were giving, you know, feedback in the feedback forum and were met with hostility. The photography forum, CVPL and many other were directly affected by this. Something along the lines of, sorry lads, got this one wrong, realise this wasn't very funny and we'll try harder next year, would have gone down well. People would see a positive repsonse to their feedback and everyones a winner.

But people like Frada start firing their considerable e-weight around with reckless abandoan pretty certain that there will be no ramifications for it. ANd they were right. If I had started a feedback thread and said whoever put up the 'joke' are pussies I would have been rightly infracted.

The fact that you had to instruct Frada to reign it in is very telling.

If he'd said that certain parts of the site were rendered unusable would he have been wrong. The fact of the matter is that Frada called the detractors pussies. We know what he was trying to do and what he did. Does it make a difference that he did it in a general manner or whether he personally quoted every detractor and posted pussy beneath their posts? No it doesn't.

That's bollocks. You can see exactly what's in front of you. For every supposed breach of the charter to you take into account the 'history' between posters. You do in your hole. The dig at Tallon is more than evident. Make a call, and don't use the whole 'history' bullshít.

For the record, that is not correct. As has been stated already, Lots of people couldn't reply to threads or post new threads after the 'joke' settings were applied.

I did not lose any sleep over this. But it was annoying to not be able to post, not knowing how long the outage was going to last.

I suspect the block on posting privileges was unintentionally caused by the joke Gold Account picture settings. I would be disappointed if someone did this deliberately. If someone could clarify whether the posting outage was caused by design or blunder, I would appreciate it.

You're absolutely right, these things can often go either way. In this case, in this context I think Frada was harsh but just about skirted around it being personal. Personally I agree with his setniment but not the way he said it.

Well I don't know if the lads did or didn't see it as a mistake, I honestly don't. I can only respond to the questions that were made about the abuse, but I can see where you're coming from completely. I'm not speaking on their behalf :)

How is it telling? I've said multiple times he was ott. Me, personally, I'm not going to infract. If you want to ask another Admin to look into it that's cool.

See, this is where things start to get a bit messy. That - to me - is pretty aggressive and uncivil discourse. Could I request that you not speak to me like that please?

I do actually take history into account, very often. Especially if I know the two idnividuals. And I'll often call on a Mod or fellow Admin to make a call for me if I feel biased. So it's not 'bullsh*t', it's how I operate.

    Dear sir stroke madam

People seem to be ignoring the most important point here.

The day is called "All fools day".

The person who falls for a prank on "All fools day" is known as an "April Fool".

It's not called Aprils fools day and if we start to refer to it as such then the terrorists have already won.

Do you mean to say then that 2013 April Fool's day is now cancelled due to the terrorists and their weapons of mass destruction? Oh sod it. :(

Just reminded me of a joke we played on a guy in work back in the 90s. Bit of a bully really - an autoexec was put on his machine so that when he opened Excel (I think) it blasted out a siren noise and had scrolling text on his screen "ACCESS TO PORN DETECTED, REPORT SENT TO MANAGEMENT. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DESK OR TURN OFF YOUR MACHINE."

Needless to say he didn't find this funny either - personally though I thought it was hilarious - as did the guys in the local IT department who had hacked his machine, took me a while to trace it back to them they were keeping very quiet about the whole affair...

Not that I'm biased (I'm not actually but your choice to believe/not) but I enjoyed this year's joke. Made you laugh you lose 3 a bit of a non-event for me but plenty other forums to peruse. I had a real Doh! moment when I saw it first - forgot about all the planning and my first thought was "what announcement did I miss this time"...

  • Registered Users Posts: 44,080 ✭✭✭✭Micky Dolenz

I missed most of it due to having better things to do on a Sunday morning. Like sleeping.

Can we do it again just so I know?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Didn't bother me, I just found it unfunny. I guess if others found it unfunny though and clocked it was a prank straightaway, it might have gotten tedious being met with it all the time.

The Faceboards stunt a few years back was very good IMO - I can't remember a good one since though, maybe I'm wrong however. People realise quickly now - not saying that as an attack on Boards though.
