Hi, I run a small business from my house (dog grooming) and have heard a couple of scare stories about people getting caught for business rates which were back dated and forced to close their business. Can someone tell me if you are liable for business rates when working from your home??

Aren't you only liable to pay rates for a commercial premises? If you are operating out if your home then that should not be an issue, but you could always check with yout local county council and make an enquiry on the premise that you are thinking of setting up a business and don't feel obliged to tell then the truth that you are currently operating....

Ive a feeling that all us sme's operating from home are next in line for rates due to dwindling income for councils... I dont have concrete evidence that it is already in place but cro were full of extra questions to me when i registered a few months ago and rates sprung to mind...
