    hi all,

not sure if this is the right place for this post but mods feel free to move it!

have been seeing gf for almost 2mts now, both of us live at home but next weekend i have a free house and she will be spending the weekend with me!!

so i want to cook her a really nice meal but not too sure what to do. im fairly ok in the kitchen so the idea of cooking doesnt scare me!

do i do starter and dessert or just a main course??

    any advice welcome!!

From personal experience, cook a woman a good 3 course meal and you'll usually end up with a second dessert ;)

First of all, this is in the wrong section.

The only thing I could suggest is buy a good cooking book and pick a meal that looks tasty, not too messy and a little bit different.

Preferably ask a couple of mates around the day before and do a mock run on them if you really want it to go smoothly...

Aw, how lovely. First ask her if there is anything she doesn't like. Then I'd cook three pretty light courses if I were you. A three-course meal is quite a lot of food and you don't want to be feeling achy-full and not put your heart and soul into some lovin' later on because of feeling so stuffed ;) Have you got a specific menu in mind or are you looking for suggestions?

There is a cooking and recipe forum so you'll get lots of nice ideas from there

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=610

Personally I'd go with dishes that don't require you slaving in the kitchen when she gets there so a nice avocado salad or pre-make a soup if it's cold.

I made this recently and it is DELISH http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/spinachandpotatosoup_84312

Then for maincourse I'd have something tasty like this (which incidentally is like food porn, my OH makes it and it is beautiful)
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/salted_pollack_with_a_41672
(This is also nice with cod or haddock)

And then a very simple dessert of meringues (you can buy mini ones in M & S and they are gorgeous) with fresh berries and whipped cream with some orange chocolate grated over the top....nyumnyumnyum :)

Not too much work in the above and all very tasty! I've made myself hungry reading that!!

First find out if there's anything she won't eat or any food allergies...

I'd recommend a salad or a soup for starters. You can make either from scratch quite easily and have enerything pre-prepared so you just need to assemble the ingredients or heat the soup. If you're going for a salad, try using some different leaves like rocket, baby spinach, lamb's lettuce, red cabbage etc so it's not boring. Pine nuts are great in a salad too IMO as well as maybe some pear or apple and some nice blue cheese.

For mains I would say have a look at something like Jamie Oliver 30 Minute Meals. All the mains can be made super quick and don't require a huge amount of culinary skill or expensive ingredients and you won't be stuck in the kitchen all evening slaving over it.

For dessert, something light and easy. Meringue with ice cream and berries is so easy and looks and tastes great. You can make the meringues from scratch the morning of the dinner so you just have to assemble the dessert later. Get some good quality vanilla bean ice cream and you're good to go! Of course you can buy the meringues if you're tight for time but home made ones are so much better!

How old are you currylad and (more importantly) how old is the lady? Are ye both "into" food or not? Are ye going out long? Reason I'm asking is that, unless ye are both foodies and are only going out a bit I'd try and make something that I could prepare in advance. Saw this on TV the other night and it looks delish and easy (Rachel Allen: Beef provencale stew http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/648096 )

There was an excellent dessert somewhere here in boards some months ago and as well as being delish it was ultra-easy:
chop up strawberries and mix with balsamic vinegar in a bowl and leave for an hour
Mix a good quality (Glenisc or equiv) lemon (or vanilla) yogurt with creme fraiche (equal parts or slightly more yogurt)

Put the yogurt/creme fraiche mix into a class, top with the strawberries and sprinkle some sugar on top.

Then for the best bit....serve with chilled champagne ;)
