    We need a thread merge.

Really sad news though, from a kid buying C64 + games, to buying parts for my first PC build (a 486 :D ) to buying components for college projects, and then buying PC parts and equipment in more recent years, I've always had a bit of a relationship with Peats.

Really sorry to see them go :(

How do you know they'll get nothing? Also it all depends on how much Peats actually wanted the rent to be dropped by. If the landlord felt it was to low and knew he'd easily find another tenant then can't argue with him refusing Peats.

This is the common misconception. The landlords that we speak of aren't one individual, the landlords are investment firms and the like. Commercial rent and rental contracts are very complicated things.

My first ever game console was from the one on Parnell street in 1987....Atari 600 xl. Always remember the joy as I was 12 at the time. Sad to see it go.

I bought a laptop off them there last week for €1100. It was the nearly the cheapest I could find online for this specific model.

I wonder will they be back in some other form or other. Maybe with just one shop in the city centre.

So I wonder what happens us!
Its alot of money to lose.
    Im ragging:mad:
and of course sad for those who lost their jobs...but my husband lost his job and bought this laptop in a bid to start up a business

    Vote yes for jobs.

Maybe if they all worked for €1.34 an hour like the no camp said everyone would have to, Peats could keep trading?

they hired proper staff who knew their ****.
That is always worth a small premium on items.

They opened too many small shops like the ones on Dame St and in Rathmines as well as the Sony shops. At a time when they're facing down online giants they should have been consolidating into one or two big stores. Dublin still sorely lacks a really good specialist av outlet.

sound bunch of lads but in a time of economic hardship people look for better deals online etc.

    a real shame.

They were overpriced even before the days of internet shopping. Not surprised in the least, but sucks for the staff.

Awful news. I've dealt with Peats for several years and they were always a pleasure to work with - one of the only retailers left that actually knew what they were talking about and could provide decent advice when it comes to purchasing AV equipment etc. A huge loss to Dublin retail, very sorry to see them go :(

The internet really has destroyed high street retailing for specialist shops in particular. People are only using these shops as a shop window, seeing what they like, writing down model numbers and buying it online.

People here will bemoan the loss of this shop, but have these people ever gone into a shop just to try something out and then buy it online?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭fryup

yes things are generally cheaper online but when you add on P&P the saving aren't that great really

It really is sad seeing these stores closing.

Great staff always. Sad to see them close. But this is the way things are going. Someone has to consolidate the Irish gaming and technological sector into a warehouse where people can buy online and it gets shipped out to them locally.

24 million in 2007 and they didn't see the writing on the wall. They only have them self's to blame for going out of business. They should have switched to a more competitive online store instead of brick and mortar one. They had the money and the brand name. Lack of vision is why they are going out of business.

Were too small. There's a reason amazon don't have a .ie site.

Sad to see them go. I rememer getting my first walkman there, then my first cd man, then minidisc... :/

Hate to see people lose jobs, but any time I ever went into Peats, I was ignored or patronised by the staff.

I wanted to buy a pretty expensive TV there before xmas, but they had no time for me at all, while the guys in Sony shop where I ended up buying were extremey helpful and enthusiastic. Sony were cheaper than online as it turned out, sad to see them go too. Odd though, considering that both brands were owned by the same people.

wasnt an option. if they kept trading as one or two shops they can be sued for the the rent thats being held back from the other ones. it was considered.

Along with 90% of Ireland ffs.

They're a victim of an unlucky tsunami of changing consumer habits and the worst economic conditions in about a century.
