No, not at all. There's crime everywhere, keep your wits about ya and you'll be grand.

I was browsing on here because Ive never lived further south than North Dublin. So thought to myself that I will pop onto Boards and have a llok at info about Cork, Waterford, Wexford etc. Cork is quite expensive to rent, so was thinking about maybe Gorse, Wexford or Waterford. Reading all this really puts me off because I was a house just a little bit out of town, in the countryside, but withing 10-15 minutes walking distance to town. Ive a car, its the OH Im worried about when Im out at work.

Is Waterford as bad as this thread makes out?

There's scumbags and crime in every city in ireland. There's no such thing as a crime free city.As it is Waterford suffers from crime issues like any other city in ireland but that is mainly due to the fact that it's an economic blackspot. In my opinion Waterford is my favourite irish city along with Cork and i have found the city to be very safe and the people to be very friendly.Places like Ballybricken Green can be dodgy with regards to drug addicts and drunks but that's the only part of the city centre that i would feel unsafe in.

Four cars ransacked in the Industrial Estate, Cork Road on Friday night.
    Speechless.
You earning your life through hard work only to discover some scumbags went through your belongings while you were at work.

Is there really no way to address the issue?

Metalman Brewing just reported on their FB page: "Mondays, eh? So far, (1) tools stolen from van overnight, and (2) gas burner died mid-brew so batch will need to be disposed of. Dreading what (3) is going to bring....."

I live on the Cork Road (area across from Woodies). In the last two months I've had people trying to open my front door while I was home at least once every week. A neighbour was robbed before Christmas when he left his door open while he went to the shop and was gone for less than 5 minutes. I'd advise anyone in the area to make sure all their windows and front/back doors are locked even while they're at home for at least the next few weeks, especially those who live alone and the elderly. I honestly believe the area is being watched as I've had very dodgy looking charity collectors come knocking a few times in the last few weeks, one even asked if a few my neighbour's houses were vacant as no one answered which was very suspicious.

Every week you read in the paper there are more & more robberies occurring all over the city. I think we all should be more vigilant towards our neighbours properties, etc. Try and get people in the habit of "being nosey" for all of a better word.

Grantstown park is getting hit as well. Been a few break ins the lat week or so. Happening during the day and at night. Looks like houses are getting watched to see when people are out.

I agree, most criminals are opportunists. They will go for the low hanging fruit on the tree.
Got an alarm & recently the area put up neighbourhood signs which should help a bit.

I reckon you'd need to seriously want to know what you are about confronting a robber or pair of them with spray or anything else for that matter. Not something you'd go into lightly.

Well worth calling to inform the Gardai about any suspicions. At least being stopped and quizzed in your area will be some kind of deterrent.

AFAIK, it is illegal to have pepper spray in Ireland.

But its not illegal to protect you property other ways and means to do it...

One other way to help deter breakins and the like is to make sure your home looks like its actually lived in full time. Cut the grass/hedges, tidy any rubbish up, sweep the winter muck off the drive and so on. Places that look somewhat neglected/semi occupied are likely to attract the passing chancer I reckon.

Aldi have these in stock at the moment, I picked one up on monday, i get an email on my phone with 6 photos anytime someone walks up the driveway. It wont stop anyone robbing the house but at least there is a chance of capturing a pic of the robbers...

Capturing pictures? with the Irish justice system? IF they ever went to court theyd tell how they are poor unfortunate junkies who society has wronged and turned their backs on and they were only trying to feed a habit and in the time since theyve been caught theyve entered a programme and found jesus to boot, I wouldnt go relying on the Irish Court system, they get away with it 99.9 percent of the time and may as well give the two fingers back at you, The amount of rapists and Paedophiles getting off more or less scot free in this country is alarming, so what hope have we got when our houses are broken into, you have to admit that there doesnt seem to be any deterent for the thieves!

were witnessing a hugh breakdown of society I'm afraid folks, it feel like a case of 'everyone for yourself' attitude from the top down.

Maybe papa Francis can save us all now....but don't hold your breath!

I totally argee with you on the break down of society! Not that i agree with religon but i think the break down of religon and the catholic church have made a huge change and impact in Ireland, in the same way that when the IRA were no longer, there was a huge void left in the Dublin crime scene and so many gangs began to struggle for power, strange analagy i know!

Who said anything about courts?? More like having a pic of the next passenger in the boot of my car for a nice trip into the middle of nowhere ;-)

Seriously though i agree with you, the judicial system here is shockingly bad, its becoming more frequent to hear in the news that "the accused has 97 previous convictions...." and like you said they play up to the whole "oh, he comes from a broken home" like its a get out of jail free card. I know plenty of people from broken homes and they live perfectly normal law obeying lives.. You hit the nail on the head saying there is no deterrent for crims, they are laughing at us :(

As the other poster said there does seem to be a breakdown in society, there was a good documentary there the other day about Porn in Irish homes and the amount of it being watched by young boys and even girls of extremely hard core nature, I know this is slightly going off topic but its part of the whole jigsaw, were living in a society where nothing is sacred we have a serious drink problem and drugs are becoming more widely used and available can we call it a hedonistic society?

People who commit crime dont seem to be punished even in rape and paedophile cases, judges seem to be living in Ivory towers getting paid vast sums of money in pay and pensions handing down petty sentences to these junkies and the ordinary joe soap is the one that pays through the crimes being commited on them and then we have to pay through our taxes to keep them in what seems to be a cushy prison system, I would also ask the question about lighter sentences being handed down due to over crowding of prisons and not enough space,

I was talking to somebody recently about security and i was told ah theres CCTV there, i said yeah but if you have your faced smashed in and your jaw wired and you cant sleep at night and have panic attacks after youve been attacked chances are they attacker will only get community service or a suspended sentence, its all a joke!
