Writing in text of a dissertation,

I was going to say 77 percent.

Microsoft word is telling me to write 77 per cent.

(been told to write percent [or per cent] in text instead of %)

    Opinions?

    Cheers

I think per cent may be British English and percent may tend to be more American English.

To be honest, I think you'll be fine with either. I always use percent.

That's because you regard it as "this word". I regard it as "these words".

Per cent looks like a monetary term to me.

I use "per cent" but "percentage" when referring to a quantity. During the course of my career, I've come across the term "per mille" (per thousand), and writing permille would just be plain odd :)
