    Hello,

I've recently taken to gathering shrimps and larvae from the river bed to see what flies are present. However, I'm having a bit of trouble identifying the insects I gather in my net. Are there any websites/books that could assist me in my so far futile effort? Also, are there any similar resources that give advice with regards to which flies best imitate what's in my net?

    Many Thanks.

There is loads of information online,

    http://www.first-nature.com/insects/index.php

The flickr links are from Europe, and some of the insects may not be relevant but you'll get the idea.

I have a book called The Flyfishermans Entomological Pattern Book by John Cawthorne. Its a great reference book for fly life on and in the river. It'll help you identify a nymph or larva so you know what the adult will be and vice versa. It gives dressings for imitations and gives the hook length rather than the hook size which i found useful. I would recommend this book to any river flyfisher.
