haha, google 'limerick person of the year', i was tempted to say what BB said when i saw snoopy's OP, but i thought i'd sooner not waste any more energy on him, not to mention this thread is about a real award, not some makey uppy reason to give somebody an ego boost!

anyway, paul o connell awarded freedom of the city- fantastic news! :)

Good choice. Great role model for kids and by all accounts a good guy.

Yeah, he's a great role model. I remember seeing him walking around town before the 2006 Heineken Cup Final and people saying good luck to him and he seemed so shy and down to earth.

There was a lovely story I heard from a friend who works for The Limerick Leader about Paul during the Special Olympics event held at Thomond Park. The journalist was not happy though ha ha he asked Paul for a quick interview and he replied that he was busy and give him a few minutes. This was told to me as a bad story about Paul but turns out he was chatting and getting a photo taken with one of the athletes. I loved it and still tease my friend about it when he mentions rugby :D

Definitely well deserved as said, glad to see something good in the news.
My brother used to see him around often and had great time for him and my little nephews who now play rugby as well.

Excuse my stupidity here for a minute but I've got to ask, what exactly is "freedom of the city"?? Does it come with any entitlements?

Free dinner boxes from Chicken Hut for life. He has to stump up for the gravy himself though, sickener.

Great that Paul O'Connell, a real Limerick hero who portrays the city in such a good light gets the freedom of the city and especially in the same week the Dundon-McCarthys lost their freedom

Thats in Dublin, in Limerick you get to keep your horse outside.

Heard that one on the radio.

He just got the freedom of Limerick, but he has been walking around for the last 10 years like he owns the place anyway!

    From here
