The poem is written by Larkin in the persona of a female on her wedding day. The main emotions that are explored in the poem are the joy, expectation and excitement of the young woman on the brink of her new life. To make it easier for yourself, separate the poem into two blocks: the first stanza is about the wedding night, with the second stanza being about the morning after. The night is so surreal and romantic, yet the morning after seems to just be a return to normality for the woman Larkin is portraying.

The techniques used in the poem: there's a lot of enjambement, suggesting the stream of consciousness. There's plenty of sibilance and sensual language, as well as broad vowel assonance on occasion. Perhaps the biggest technique is the "wind" itself - symbolising the winds of change in this couple's life, or indeed a storm that is about to come their way.

    Hope this helps :)
