Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone know what the last one's magnitude was that caused that huge tsunami on christmas?

Between 9 and 9.3 form what I can see online, this new one could be lethal.

There are actually a lot of pieces that have to slot into place for a disaster the size of the 2004 one. The depth and location of the quake is as important as the magnitude. An 8M earthquake in the wrong spot could cause far more devastation than a 9M earthquake in a different location, even though the 9M is 32 times more powerful.

This one is roughly as shallow as the 2004 one, but significantly weaker. At least there's serious early warning this time though, even if a tsunami doesn't appear.

The 9 is 32 times greater than an 8. That's scary. Does it go up by 32 times for each magnitude?

Another megaquake there are a lot of them recently a lot more than usual.

2004 quake caused a massive ridge on the sea bed to displace a massive amount of water, size of the quake won't matter a whole lot

Roughly. It's a logarithmic scale, so a 9 is 1000 times more powerful than a 7, and 1 million times more powerful than a five. Each jump on the scale is an increase in power of 31.62 times.

Sorry - hadn't seen this thread when I opened a new one.

I'm on the east coast of India and we felt the earthquake from here. Everyone ran out of buildings into the street and looked very panicked. Only tremors here though but still scary.

Let's just hope the tsunami warning stays as a warning only. Bah, scared! Anyone got a spare helicopter for me?

I'd say it won't be anything like 2004. What does an earthquake feel like anyway?

Just got tremors here... things shook for a minute but that was it. It was nothing like in Banda Aceh I'm sure.

Sister in law just posted this status update to her facebook page!
    wow earthquake...strong..

She lives in Northern Sumatra (about 100 k from Banda Aceh)

Hopefully its not going to prove to be something worthy of posting to the "DUMB FACEBOOK STATUS UPDATES" thread

and great to know that people can always find time to keep their FB updated for the rest of us.............i can just picture her running for higher ground, tapping furiuosly on her iphone.

Seeks unlikely to be a tsunami as the crust has shifted horizontally rather then vertically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Daithi 1

Lots of folk predicted this on FB and youtube. Seems like everyone knows about the 188 cycle but anyone that matters.

    Guy states 9th 10th or 11th there will be a 7.5 +.

    pacific tsunami warning centre
    http://ptwc.weather.gov/ptwc/text.php?id=indian.TSUIOX.2012.04.11.1014
    EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY
ALREADY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG SOME COASTS.

BASED ON THESE DATA THE THREAT CONTINUES FOR ALL COASTAL AREAS OF
THE INDIAN OCEAN. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME
OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN
LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO
BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE
TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE
VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST
    BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN

yeah 33ft of a change so that was massive!

its weird that this *may* not cause a massive tsunami but a smaller aftershock could create one due to a ground shift after the original quake weakened the ground.

Fingers crossed neither of these circumstances happen

I've been through a few "small" ones, the largest being 6.3. The first one i witnessed (4 point something) i thought my wife, who was sitting behind me, nudged my chair so i moved a bit to let her out. But the nudge was a quake. Then i saw the curtains move away from the wall. This was because the wall moved but the curtains stayed there for a moment! Then the whole house was like it was on rollers and it rolled over and back about 10 times. Not violently either, it was gentle enough. All this was accompanied by a low rumbling sound like a train was passing outside.
The 6.3 was all of the above multiplied many times. My kid was only a few weeks old and was in a wheeled bassinet/cot yoke. He was rolling up and down the floor by about 2 feet. Hmm.....i got out of NZ not to long after!

    Sorry for the off topic.

Currently here in Thailand felt the first quake and it was a surreal experience, within the first few minutes there was massive panic and the tsunami hooters went off and people have begun evacuating, I'm on the 7th story around 100metres from the beach so will wait it out should it.

Some fright to get all the same.

The consensus is that a wave won't come unless the second aftershock triggers it, I'm staying put for fear that I would get caught up in the tsunami whilst trying to evacuate. I can go up another 6 stories to eleventh floor and roof should it strike.

Is there no context in which this comment won't arise?

That video is mad. Japan gets a crazy amount of earthquakes. Following the Japan earthquake quake alert on Twitter, they get at least 5-10 small ones a day. I know a guy who lived there and said they dont even pay attention to them most of the time, just carry on like its a gust of wind etc.

Yeah there's been report of 1m waves so far. Nothing major. We'd know about it by now if there was a problem.
