Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

my 01 passat (AVB) tdi is due its next oil change around now.
while i change it every 10k miles, its going ok.
last two times though the oil looked very black and dead. nothing like what i put into it 10k before!
is there any thing i can put into it to clean it out a bit? im a bit worried that the viscosiuty might be affected, hence the turbo being starved.
is there a diesel engine "rinse" i can run through after the oil is let out, and before the new oil goes in?
is ther an additive i can put in a few miles before the oil is changed?
usually the car is cold when i change the oil.
    cheers

I wouldn't put in any additive.

I would use a good branded oil and I would change it at least twice as frequently as you're doing.

Drain the old oil when hot to get the most of the old stuff out.

When you put new oil it's golden nice colour.
However even after driving for 1000 km your oil already looks completely black and dirty, and there's nothing wrong with it.
Changing oil every 10k miles is reasonable and will be grand with most vehicles.

That just happens diesels nothing to worry about, you can get additives for oil, but its just snake oil really, just use good oil as said above and it will be fine.

I would change it more often than 10k tbh. 10k is probably what VW say but diesels benefit from regular oil changes.

I was replacing a leaking rocker cover gasket the other day on an old Escort van which had received 3,000 mile oil changes throughout it's life and the timing gear looked like a freshly assembled engine after 200,000 miles. I put this down to the regular oil changes and it must surely extend engine life over having a load of black gunge pumped around the engine. Why anyone would want to extend the life of an Escort is another matter but the owner seems to like it.

You could use an engine flush before putting in new oil and also use an injector cleaner. This may help.

It's just a TDI thing, or at least that seems to be the general opinion on it whenever it gets brought up. If you're worried, maybe change the oil at 7.5k miles instead of 10k

I've owned 3 diesels and the oil always appears black however I've found if you take out the dipstick and examine it you can still see the oil is golden on the stick if it is reasonably fresh

so it seems like my oil isnt as bad as i thought, its a normal situation. although i do suspect that he car may have beel clocked, there may really be in the region of 250k on it, but i cant confirm that as i have no proof, just excessive wear on thre front end at 150k ( 2 drives, numerous suspension parts, clutch) so this may be a part of it also. although if i knew it was actually 250k, i wouldnt be too worried, as it would be a maintain and drive it to near death situation.

its a bit smokey also, on acceleration, and a wee bit cruising at a steady pace (2000rpm). i was thoinking this was either the turbo or the injectors. as the smoke is black, i think its unburnt diesel.
If it was blue, i would suspect failing turbo?
    any opinions on this?
