A question probably something easy to answer:rolleyes:

Been in a few places that offer free wifi. Scan for it on my phone and it picks it up but then it keeps on saying obtaining IP address and it won't connect

Seen this a few times in a few bars restaurants is it the router issue or smartphone settings that is stopping it from connecting?

    Thanks

Possible small pool of free IPs been setup on their end !
Possible firewall or something blocking connection to / from DHCP erver or relay !
Possible a bad day for WiFi provider and they like having a laugh at users trying to get it working !?

More than likely ... looking for a techie to fix their WiFi network ... :)

    All ... or ... none !?

Maybe people just connect for a few minutes, go away, the DHCP lease is far too long and it can't free up IP addresses quickly enough.

usually it means just not connected.

I have seen where wrong password is entered, it says "obtaining IP" when this cannot be correct as it cannot have connected due to wrong password.

Try moving closer to where the unit is located. Try disconnecting and re-connecting. If it needs a password to connect, then give up until you have the password.

hi,no ofence...but...what password you need for free wifi access !?
    also,password/authentication first,then IP kicks in.

Often "free" wifi needs a password, such as Macdonalds, many hotels etc.

I have seen when the wrong password is entered the device says "finding an ip address" but it can't be as it can't have passed the password stage.

Yes, if the wifi is unencrypted, deliberately open, with no click here to accept our terms and conditions page, and intends on giving out an ip address then you do not need a password for some places.

However many/most places have some sort of password or legal "accept terms and conditions to continue"

The password is generally used to stop people living across the street accessing the "free" wifi 24/7/365
