I'm hoping to get at least 500points so I can get the entrance scholarship for Maynooth! One grand in my pocket can't go wrong :D

There are lots of different scholarships and bursaries available.

In relation to that one you mentioned, 60 students between about 192 DEIS schools getting a bursary that won't even cover the registration fee for many colleges is not going to do much really, but I suppose it's a start.

NUIG 560 points :) I think I get something like 2000 euro so if I did get that many points (well I did in my mocks :P) I would be delighted :D

Does anyone know if that announcement has any effect on this year's 'UL40' scholarships?

I'd say any scholarship offered by the university itself (rather than the department) is safe.

One issue I would have with today's announcement is that there are plenty of pupils in non-Deis school who could do with a leg up. Will they fall through the gaps?

As part of Budget 2012, Minister Quinn committed to abolishing all existing scholarship schemes.
Does this only apply to new students from 2012 onwards? Or is it retrospective?

Cool! I'm applying for NUIG as well, but my course was only 370 last year so I haven't really been too stressed about points. That scholarship could change that though :pac: What's the story with it? Do many people get it?

Well as far as I know anyone who gets over 560 gets the money, apart from those doing medicine heh :P What course are you doing? Commerce?

I would say it can't be from now. To replace all the different schemes with just 60 bursaries would be a major step backwards.

I also can't see how (for example) if I decide as a private citizen (or company, or union, or club) to offer a scholarship or bursary, what business that is of the Department of Education? Mr. Quinn may be speaking only of Department-funded prizes such as those for the highest marks in the various subjects etc.

Sweet :D Gives me a reason to study again  Undenominated Science :) It's the only course I can get a degree in Pharmacology through so that's why I chose it. What about yourself?

Anyone over 560 gets it, except in medicine where its the top 10 combined LC points and HPAT. Its €1700, you get a letter about it around the end of October and the entrance ceremony is in November.

I'm doing mathematical science :D It's kinda like your course but just better :) I know loads of people doing that course in my year haha they're all pure sound though! My neighbour does the course too and loves it!

Yep I'm aiming for the NUIG one too! Also, I'll try and do my best to try for the "Easter 1916 ones" if they aren't touched by the cutbacs etc... I have no chance of getting them but it's a good goal to set to motivate you into working harder! :L

You cut me deep man :pac: Haha jk :P Fair play to ya doing Mathematical Science, you must be a certified genius! I find all that stuff really interesting but I think I'd find it really difficult, I'm not even doing HL maths for the LC like. Might see ya in September man :D

yep i'm doing it also! Ya it seems to have everything! Other courses don't have as many career oppurtunities and you can specialise in so many different things in the final two years! It's a broad course! i can't wait! It's the only course in Ireland that actually stood out to me so I had my mind set on this course since the end of TY!
It's kinda like your course but just better

^^ I wouldn't say it's a better course... Our course is just more specialised.. In the Undenom you can specialise in anything really which is pretty good I think... I just was drawn to the Math-Science one becuase there are so few places to tell you the truth! :L

Do scholarships actually have to be applied for before the Leaving? Or can we recieve them automatically when the results are released?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,479 ✭✭✭ChemHickey

You automatically receive them I think. You usually get a letter in the post about a month after your results (I think anyway)

There are some you do have to apply for, definitely sports scholarships anyway. Most of the info will be in the link to studentfinance.ie that spurious posted. I'm not sure about the other scholarships but in general the college entrance scholarships won't be released until October/November when people get into college or upgraded after rechecks.

I know the JP McManus All-Ireland scholarships are not applied for.
They contact you if you have been awarded one.
Link to information about how people are selected.

Cheers, thanks for the link and the information guys :)

So you don't need to apply for the majority of scholarships? Also, I know this is a bit off topic, but when do you apply for a grant?
