I'd imagine McCarthy will be banned by then

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

Ronan and Coghlan are still inured, I doubt Ruddock and Ryan will be let off to go to Ireland, they will be training with their province. I'd have Muldoon, POM, Henry, and have McCarthy covering the back row from the bench

    4 Ryan
    5 Touhy
    6 Muldoon
    7 Henry
    8 POM

    18 DOC
    19 McCarthy

Although I wouldn't be against calling up Wilson to wear 19 with McCarthy covering lock

That's a pretty good side imo, considering all the players not available.

I like that team considering. He could also take a different composition of the bench and have Ryan covering backrow, with 2 specialist props on the bench, seeing as that's the position we need players getting gametime the most.

Any idea when his hearing is?

Hearing was today it seems. Cleared so he will be available for selection.

Jesus thats a massive relief. I thought it was very unlikely he'd be cleared. I'd have him starting so.

So is the preliminary squad announced today? Someone said it was going to be yesterday and then someone else said it was being delayed 24 hours. Anyone know?

It better be really. Given that its only a squad for that one barbarians match and the actual touring squad wont be named for another week or so (if were lucky) despite the fact that most of the other countries have named their actual touring squads already.

I don't see what the big delay is really. I mean almost all of the possible players will be included in the squad anyway (given that there'll be no leinster lads) so whats the hold up?

    Squad announced:

Ireland Squad (v Barbarians, Gloucester, May 29th):
    Forwards (13):
    Rory Best (Banbridge-Ulster)
    Tom Court (Malone-Ulster)
    Stephen Ferris (Dungannon-Ulster)
    Declan Fitzpatrick (Dungannon-Ulster)*
    Chris Henry (Belfast Harlequins-Ulster)
    Ronan Loughney (Galwegians-Connacht)*
    John Muldoon (Galwegians-Connacht)
    Donncha O'Callaghan (Cork Constitution-Munster)
    Peter O'Mahony (Cork Constitution-Munster)
    Donnacha Ryan (Shannon-Munster)
    Mike Sherry (Garryowen-Munster)*
    Dan Tuohy (Ballymena-Ulster)
    A.N.Other

    Backs (11):
    Darren Cave (Belfast Harlequins-Ulster)
    Keith Earls (Young Munster-Munster)
    Craig Gilroy (Dungannon-Ulster)*
    Paul Marshall (Ballynahinch-Ulster)*
    Conor Murray (Garryowen-Munster)
    Ronan O'Gara (Cork Constitution-Munster)
    Nevin Spence (Ballynahinch-Ulster)*
    Andrew Trimble (Ballymena-Ulster)
    Paddy Wallace (Ballymena-Ulster)
    Simon Zebo (Cork Constitution)*
    A.N. Other

I would imagine itl be Mike McCarthy as the extra forward and Felix Jones as the extra back

    Just looking at your squad
    I wouldn't take Archer. I'd take Macklin if we're to take a young tight-head.

Don't think Ryan deserves to travel based on how little he's featured this season, I think Coughlan deserves to travel ahead of him, although Coughlan is injured so if he can't go I'd like to see Ruddock go instead.

How you can leave out Reddan is beyond me

Doubt he'll leave D'Arcy behind, I'd also take Wallace and Cave and have McFadden travel as wing option(not that I'd play him on the wing, I'd have him come as a centre who can cover wing)

Looking at your back-three makes me grimace. Hurley shouldn't go, nor should Zebo.

    My choice
    LH: Healy, Court
    HK: Best, Cronin, Sherry
    TH: Ross, Macklin
    LK: O'Connell, Ryan, Tuohy, O'Callaghan
    FK: Ferris, O'Brien, Henry, O'Mahony
    N8: Heaslip, Coughlan
    SH: Reddan, Boss, Murray
    OH: Sexton, Madigan, O'Gara
    CT: D'Arcy, Wallace, Cave, O'Driscoll
    WG: Earls, Trimble, Fitzgerald, McFadden
    FB: Kearney, Jones

to be totally honest i wouldnt take rog, darcy or trimble and i think poc should be left recover

MOD can we get this thread merged with the other Tour thread? makes no sense having two the same

Is it a bit of a shock Kidney didn't choose Archer, considering he started for the Wolfhounds??

It's not a bad squad, couple of players that it seems a small bit stupid to play in that game. ROG to start at out-half, what are we going to learn about him?? I'd have liked to see Keatley get a start tbh.

And there's no fullback as far as I can see, so I'm assuming the last back will be either Jones or Duffy.

No Connacht backs- Griffin/Duffy/TOH, and Wilkinson isn't included in the forwards, is he injured?

Can't really think of any major absentees though.

Big shame Jackson isn't there, he'll probably go with the U20s. If this was Australia he would be in the squad. Finally TOL is gone.

ROG to start at 10 with Wallace probably at 12.

Its a lot better for Jackson to get four or five games than to sit on the bench for the tour, also better for him to prepare the tournament properly rather than missing a week where teh U20s squad is all together to play a meaningless firendly

By the way U20 squad has already been named and Jackson is in it.

McCarthy and O' Halloran hard done by, but I'm sure they're next in line. Hope the A.N Other is Keatley, really don't want to see ROG start this game.

Would have liked to see wilkinson but cant see the problem with the rest

I know we are short in the back row for this game but would have liked to see ferris rested hopefully he wont travel to NZ

Donnacha O'Callaghan ahead of Mike McCarthy??

Are you serious? The only way that is justifiable is if Kidney thought he was getting a ban.

    Wilkinson has a calf problem.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,166 ✭✭✭✭Zzippy

DOC? Really? Ah come on Deccie, the joke's over now surely...

No McCarthy. The joke is compounded.

No fullback in squad but Jones and Duffy omitted, surely one of them has to be the AN Other.

Why bother with AN Other at all, why not name players now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 177 ✭✭cp

I presume the A.N. Other in the backs is to see if Jones recovers, and if not Duffy to come in.

Awful lot of centre's in that squad. Surprised by Spence's inclusion given he hasn't been starting for Ulster. Wondering will Wallace be on the bench as cover for OH instead of starting. Unlucky for him if that's the case. Be very revealing to see who's picked there. - we could potentially see any of Wallace/Earls, Wallace/Cave. Spence/Cave, Spence/Earls...

OR we could see Earls in the wing/ fullback given that there's only 2 specialist wings and zero (for now) fullbacks in the squad.. If I were Earls wanting to be seen as a specialist centre, I'd be a little bit anxious with that squad..

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,636 ✭✭✭✭Tox56

It's possible the A.N Other is McCarthy unless I'm missing someone obvious, and I can't understand why they would bother with "A.N Other".

AN Other has to be McCarthy in the pack

and Jones / Duffy in the backs

I'm no DOC apologist, but I'm not sure if you're comparing like with like there; our Connacht friends might be able to clarify but I thought McCarthy was primarily a 5, i.e. middle of the Lineout jumper, as opposed to O'Callaghan who jumps at the front??

    I'm no expert here BTW!!

But what I fear will be picked

POM, Henry, Ferris, Ryan, DOC, Fitzpatrick, Best, Court

McCarthy was playing at 2 against Glasgow. Himself and Swifty are constantly changing.

Is there a chance the an other is reserved for a leinster player who doesnt start the final... Madigan perhaps?

Wallace is the out-half cover. There will be no Leinster players because of the Rabo finals.

There is no full-back there so it will be Duffy/Jones.

I would hope so, I find it mind-numbingly depressing that we'd go into a game which counts for precisely zero with Ronan O'Gara and Paddy Wallace as the out-halves.

It's unlikely though, the Rabo final is the Sunday afternoon so Madigan (or whoever else) would only be joining the Ireland squad the day before the match.

Having any Connacht players at all in the squad is a scandal. There are rules you know

What on earth is the point of having ROG in that squad!? Notonly in the squad but the only fly half. Absolute pointless.
