Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So lads, a few of you remember, that last march I had to put my pride and joy skyline off road, as it was quite a hit on my back account after pay cuts and hour cuts. I needed bangornomics mobile! my mechanic friend called me and said, he got a friend who is selling a ford mondeo 1.6 98" with no nct for 500 quid. Well I bought that car, spent 200eu on full service, few bushings, and nct fee. So 700eu in total to have it on the road with fresh nct last year.
Well after 13th months I had nct today, and damn thing passed it again. Now how much it costed me to get this car ncted this time?
30eu for passengers mirror as misses managed to scrap it off using a wall at work..
15eu for 2 wipers as one of them felt apart 2 days ago.
That's it. The flipping thing passed nct with flying colors and Barely off from perfection on nct sheet!
Now I don't have an excuse to misses, so we could change car this year! I am stuck with mondeo for another year! God dammit!!! :)

    So conclusion:
Is it cheap? Well 700eu and it was driven every day all year and haven't missed a beat. 35eu more and I got an nct for a year again. I guess it's cheap!
Is it fun? Feck no! :( ifs the worst torture you can think off to a petrol head. Driving a souless, bland, boring mondeo from day to day :(.

    Anyway, bangornomics work ;)

Feel your pain lad, had a Mk1 1.6. I can see how it was a step up from the escort of the time, but still. I just hate the sound of that engine too... fnaar whaaar raaarsh, sounds like you're killing it whenever it goes beyond 2k rpm.
Presume yours is the Mk2? Do they still have the worlds most useless cupholders?

MK2 it is. hatchback. No CD player lol, i dont even know if it had cup holders :D.

oh yeah, it has 149k miles on it now too. funny enough, when i brought it to my friends garage, there was an 01 merc c180 up on lift, and all he did was curse. where it could have problems - it had. then we put my yoke on lift and only thing he said: "ffs, i wish they would build all cars like this, just go and book nct, she will pass". ( i am not attacking attacking mercs, its just to compare how simple these fords are :d )

In the Mk1, if you flip up the top of the armrest you get 2 cupholders. Except they are in the back seat. And at an angle. It think it may just be a sort of catapult for launching coffee at your windscreen under heavy braking...

Still, as you say bangernomics works - only cost me 235yoyo and some duct tape ( and petrol) to keep me going for 6months...

I'm doing the same thing myself and have had my second nct in my subaru vivio, (if you think driving a mondeo is bad try a 660 cc car,) failed on a hole in the back box which was fixed with mental gum, so far the most expensive thing on the car (including purchace) is petrol, second is nct's, 2 tests, 2 retests, and third is tax and buying the car,.

love your bangornomincs op, bit more space in your car :)

I feel your pain - bought one for my daughter to learn in and it is rather hateful - easy to park though:D I thought the 1.6 mondeo was quite a nice car to drive(only driven 1 once though) - certainly handled well enough on the corners and had enough poke for a 1.6....

Great news, its hard to change but sometimes you just have to do it.
I used to drive modified performance cars, Impreza STI RA Group N spec , Carlos Sainz Celica 4X4 GT Turbo Group N spec, Lancer EVO, Mazda RX-7's ect..
I had to sell my last baby Modified RX7 FC3S when the recession grabbed my balls and started squeezing and I recently bought a 99 1.3 Corolla with 120k on it for €900 with a couple of months Tax and NCT, I gave it a new clutch and a service for €150 and hope it wont cost much to get through its next NCT.
Its not my kind of car but extreme times call for extreme measures.
I think more and more people will enter the world of bangornomics, I might even stay with it when the recession is over and I get back into full time employment as its the first time ive ever had a car I didnt care about and its great stress free driving...

( friday 13th! :D ) i went to my friend mechanic to show him the sheet, and he said, that some fella was breaking same mondeo as mine, so my friend took the standart radio, which has CD player instead of cassete :D. so my mondeo can play CDs now! pimping like a boss!

That's impressive, facing into doing something similar myself, the legacy has been put up for sale. Not looking forward to the bangernomic I'm gonna have to purchase.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Ugh, I enjoy bangernomics hunting for myself but sounds like you are shopping for someone else? Minefield lad!

Well just to put in right way: bangornomics can be fun, but that's 2 sides of the coin. And one side is quite a lot smaller ( if that would be physicality possible :) )

When I test drove that ford mondeo I told friend that it was damn broken! It felt like cake on jelly tower and that I needed to keep my foot on the floor to just make it move! He replied to me: well, you just drove a car with normal everyday suspension and engine which was about 320hp less then the car you drive. So yeah, welcome to real life, enjoy the stay! Muhahahahah!
I hate driving it, but when I think of savings, it makes quite lovely car again!
    Tax: from 1000eu to 460eu, savings: 540eu
    Insurance from 1100eu to 550eu, savings: 550eu
Petrol: from 150eu per 3 weeks, to 50eu per 3 weeks. Savings: 100eu every 3 weeks.
Now that's not including parts, service and other stuff.
That mondeo payed for it self in the first day I bought it. 2 times...

As a petrol head in me - I hate it, as a human being which is trying to live life and not just pay car bills - I love it.

Indeed, my sisters Ka died and she didn't want to rush into a serious car purchase so instead of spending cash on cabs etc or renting a car for a few weeks she went bangernomics.
