I am fairly fit now, but I went back on the cigs, so in my mind I wont peak till I am off those cursed things for at least 6 months.

I suppose peaking is the best condition you can be in no matter your age. A colleague decided to do a marathon this year and he is putting in the training time, not drinking, eating well and he tells me he has never felt as good. I don't know his exact age but he must be near 60, I know he is near retirement.
