Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Overfill of oil

    Folks,

I was a little over zealous in topping up the oil on the car yesterday and have over filled it. It's about an inch above the Max on the dipstick (04 e46 318 BMW).

I have no way of draining it and I'm wondering if it's OK to drive it to the nearest garage (< 2 miles) or would this totally make a mess of stuff like seals etc?

It hasn't been driven since it was filled yesterday.

    Nope nope nope nope nope!

An inch is a lot of extra oil. No chance. Don't even start it.

Uncle in law of mine blew the engine of his 4 year old Isuzu Trooper starting it after accidentally filling oil to the brim, don't start it

    Hmmmm,

I did let it idle for about 5 mins this evening before I checked the oil and it sounded OK....

Get a big plastic syringe & some tubing & get it out through the dipstick?

I know some one who filled her car to the brim with oil (any type of oil that was to hand) and her car now sounds like its gonna explode, no amount of words can persuade her to get it sorted

The handiest way to get the excess oil out is by getting under the car and locate the sump nut, get a tray to collect the oil in and loosen the nut, let a bit out and keep checking dip stick until its at the correct level

If you don't fancy going under the car and locating the sump just buy about 3 meters of aquarium air pipe, remove the dip-stick, push the pipe down where you removed the dip-stick from and syphon out the extra oil.

I done it recently and it worked a treat.

As it happens I have a load of aquarium air hose!

Well there you go handier again!

Just be careful again in future and check the dipstick to avoid very costly repairs ;)

All sorted, a mate with axle stands came over and took about 2 litres out of the sump. Dipped it after all stands were gone and it's bang on the Max.

Got out of jail, cheers for the advice.
