I'm not too up on my weightlifting but I don't think this came as a surprise really.

    Mendes is a freak!

    Yeah no surprises there!

What with the drop in Mendes lifts between training and competition. Those videos of Mendez floating around a year ago before he started competing were nuts and then once he started competing his numbers were well off the top standard. Gilbert had a big enough drop off as well between his training vids and what he did at the nationals also.

Yeah but he was injuried ever since that 207 snatch   ;)

I do actually think he was injured. Most people don't take PED and just about manage to clean what they have snatched previously....

    It isn't surprising though.

There is simply no place for degenerate drug users in the world of Team Handball.

    Brilliant

John Broz put up the video of Mendes Nationals about a week ago and explicitly responded to a drug accusation comment saying it was not Mendes that got popped. Oops.

Mendes got two year ban? I'm not up on me drugz but two years seems light enough for that.

This could be very wrong but.....

Sine hes banned for two years, isn't he not subject to testing until 6 months before he plans to compete again? Could possibly use this time to stay on PEDs and come back a lot stronger in 2 years?

I thought I posted earlier from phone but didn't go through.

I said basically the same. That he wasn't going to london anyway, do now he just trains out of competition for two years, even on the juice, then comes back in 2014, pisses clean, makes nationals, then makes 2016 Olympics.

His comment was actually 'Pat did not test positive at nationals' and a lot of people jumped on that as being testing positive prior to them which turned out to be true

AFAIK Mendes is still eligible for out of comp testing. I'm not sure if it's for the entire 2 years, I doubt it but I think there is a 6 month period before he can compete again.

Does it matter anyway? If he uses for 2 years and then starts competing in 2014 his lifts will floor again once he's clean. Unless he can manage to snatch 230 or something, which he won't, I don't see the point. The US seems to have very stringent drug testing so he'll have to be clean(ish) for 2 years prior to the Olympics and his lifts will be B group standard again.

That's what I was thinking. I wonder if he will. I think the US can stop him competing for a year or two if he does defect. I don't know if that would be post or during his ban.

It happened to Steiner when he switched to Germany and Podobedova when she went to Kazakhstan.

This is boring. Let's argue about whether CrossFit is good or bad.

I'm with this guy. Gilbert was discovered for weightlifting from a Crossfit kids class afaik. He shoulda known eating paleo would have gotten him a gold medal and that those nasty neolithic manufactured in a lab drugs would just knock him off the wellness spectrum with a resultant fall in elite fitness.

He could have gotten better results eating a 40/30/30 macro nutrient break down and taking 2 scoops of Progenex after each of his workouts.

Lol, studid Americans and their hypocritical idealism. They'll give their military pilots ephedrine, sell guns to teenagers and declare pizza an official vegetable... but will crucify an olympic hopeful for trying to make the grade in international sport

    Such bullsh*t

I don't think he's being crucified at all. You get caught you get banned. It's the same in every country. If your a US lifter you take a huge risk taking steroids with level of testing they have but lots of international lifters are banned every year.

Mendes is not in the top 5 ranked US men. With one spot up for grabs he was only ever an outside shot for the Olympics and he was never a medal prospect. Tbh I'd say a lifter like Farris or Shankle would pretty pissed if Mendes got an Olympic spot.

I think what he means is that with their ultra vigilant testing procedures they are not only cracking down on peds but also in their chances of ever winning another medal

I don't think there's an alternative. If they test less they may as well not test at all. AFAIK, weightlifting being an Olympic sport means they have to test the way they do, funding and stuff is dependant on compliance with USADA.

The only solution is that they get so good at testing that track and field and football players start getting caught and they have no medals or super bowl Sunday and the people revolt and create the Socialist States of America and find they still can't beat the Russians, Chinese or Iranians.
