Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Had to bring in a calf this morning. Bad scour after the night and ears hanging down, Have him taken of the cow and gave him a few sachets of lectate. Its awful hard weather around here on young calfs.

Here in what used to be the Sunny South-East, we had all out from end Jan. Of course we ran out of grass:rolleyes:
Still haven't had to put anything back in though. Just buffer feeding in field...and praying for normal "soft" weather:)

Time to be watching the young calves like a hawk alright.
This is the time of year when those briars growing at the edge of a field really come in handy. Not to mention the odd bunch of rushes.

I wouldn't be too surprised if this weather keeps up. I notice here in sheepy land the ground is almost as wet as it had been in Winter, few more wet days and nights and then how will it be.

Serious deteriation in ground conditions on my place in Erris North Mayo too, according to the in-laws. I'll be down there at the weekend to review things but its looking like the ladies will have to return to the their dorms again!!:(

Moved the young stock to most sheltered field yesterday pm, even though it is out of rotation. Then again, with no growth, the rotation planner is a bit redundant:rolleyes:
They were glad of the butt of the hedge last night:)

This is where a decent hedge comes into its own - I'm right by the sea in North Mayo which makes growing one difficult. I put in some whitethorn quicks 2 years back at the back of the house(facing east) to give them a chance. Just about holding their own and do provide a bit of shelter for the lambs so I'm hoping I will end up with something decent in a few years time

PS: Just had a look at the latest weather models - I think its fair to say the going at Punchestown next week will be soft to say the least:eek:

It reminds me of an elderly neighbour, following a Teagasc recommendation to put in wire paddocks and roadways on his sprawling farm: "Early grass and paddocks won't work together in normal Spring weather. There's damn all shelter in a string of wire!" :D

I put them back in yesterday. Threw them a rake of silage last night with a bit of nuts on top.
When I went back to them this morning, they had rooted threough the silage to get at the nuts, and had no more than 25% of the silage eaten.
However, they were bellowing, and roaring like lunatics, to be let out.

I said softly to each one in turn, eat up your breafast, and shut to fcuk up, or you will be grounded for a month:o

Leaving mine out for now anyway. Lots of shelter where the calves were last night. Took some yearling heifers off wet land on Monday though and moved them to drier ground. Every year is different!

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

This feckin weather is a pain in the hole. Lads that put in the autumn and winter whinging about the price of weanlings should go to a few suckler farms to see exactly how much work goes into getting cows calved and keeping calves healthy!!

Methinks they know exactly how much work is involved.
