Friend of mine who spends alot of time in Kenya said Kipsang will win.He is sure Mutai and Makau won't win.
The head pysio for the kenyan team who treats them in London told him this.will be keepign a close eye on Kipsang(current odds 3-1)

Put 50 on Kipsang after reading this - thanks :)

    Martin Lel is the man.

It would be such a shame if he didn't get picked for the Olympics. I would love to see him win a medal.

Told you all on Wednesday who the winner was.

    Good call on Lel

just woke up and got the results....im a bit of a kipsang fan and happy he won but what does all this (last 8days) mean for olympic selection?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭myflipflops

I would guess it means Kipsang will definately go. Not even the crazy Kenya selectors can fail to pick him now.

    After that, it's trickier.

Personally, i send Kirui and Lel. Kirui is double world champ so very good in races without pace makers. Lel showed again today that he is tactically superb and has a quality kick.

I doubt they will pick Lel though. Probably Mosop as his Rotterdam performance was more impressive than others in contention.

Of the 6 shorlisted only Kipsang, Mosop, Kirui and E mutai have finished this Spring. Kipsang is a cert and id say E Mutai wont go. After that is anyones guess.

Kipsang is the only cert. I still expect G. Mutai to go, despite his DNF in Boston. The third man is anyone's guess. I'd pick Makau with Mosop as the 4th man in reserve, but who knows what selection criteria they will use (let's hope it's not brown envelops).

Kirui showed good form until he bonked, and there wont be any pacers in the Olympics. Id agree G Mutai will be selected. The Kenyans like champions so Kirui is still in with a shout with Makau and Mosop.

The most impressive run yesterday was Nell McAndrew's sub 3 hr run. 2 hrs 54 mins she did. Unreal for a 38 year old woman. She bettered her previous best by 14 minutes.

Definitely more impressive than the National record set by Mary Keitany, sure you can see one of them every week. Whereas a celeb running sub3, that's the real headline. A bit like this is better than anything Katie Taylor has done. :)

Apples and oranges. I expect those fast times from elite pro athletes. Marvellous times as well. I just thought that a 38 year old feamle non pro runner/celeb posting that time was unreal. And a big drop in her PB. Plus, she's a fan of running, and obviously a good runner. This should be welcomed and encouraged.

I'm not as impressed when it is a celeb part of who'ds job it is to keep a fit figure - i.e in a way they are a professional athlete as they need to hit the gym everyday to keep the figure that earns them money - a bit like Jenson Button and Triathlon, it is part of his job to keep fit so he is effectively getting paid to train just like a pro athlete.

Keeping a fit figure, and running a marathon in 2 hrs 54 mins aged 38 whilst not being a runner or athlete are not at all similar. Many many many people keep trim, and fairly healthy and fit; but that doesn't mean that a marathon is something easy, or a sub 3 hrs marathon at that!

Hitting the gym every day to keep a fit figure is not the same as an athlete who hits the gym/raod/track to compete in an olympic sport. How you are trying to tie the two together is beyone me. Kim Kardashian hits the gym ever day, so does Jordan. Are they pro athletes, or close to the the level of pro athletes?

Well, I think what she achieved was fantastic, considering that sub 3 hrs for someone who is not really a dedicated runner is a mark that most would say is very good. Add in that she is a woman, and 38 years old, and I think her time is pretty impressive.

I had to google who she was and some of the results returned, although pleasing to the eye, are not something I wanted appearing on a search from within my office !

Her time is pretty impressive, but afaik she is a dedicated runner (unless by that you mean a professional athlete)

Well I am glad someone sees the good in her time and what she did. I never mentioned celeb or anything. Maybe the fact that she's a "celeb" irks some. I am betting had I said that my sister or cousin, a woman, aged 38 ran in this time, knocking 14 mins of her PB and running 2 hrs 54 mins, folks would be quite impressed.

BTW, I do believe she does run a fair bit. But far from a pro athlete as a post above was almost implying. I run a fair bit, and I wouldn't break 3 hrs. I would need a hell of a lot of work. And, I am betting many here who post would also be pushed to run 2 hrs 54 mins in their late 30s. Men too!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭nerraw1111

But the only reason you're mentioning her is because she's a celeb? I don't think you'd be mentioning your sister or cousin in a thread about the men's elite field.

Incredible result. She's a great runner. I'd like to know who the Norwegian in the 45 - 49 cat that finished ahead of her is, she ran 2.53. Another 5/6 older women finished ahead of her.

Why is it unreal for a person (man or woman) to be running PBs at 38?
Look at Abhainn - he finished in the top 100 and hes what? Must be 50 at least :p

I said her run overall was unreal, and the fact that she also knocked 14 mins of her PB. 2 hrs 54 mins for a 38 year old woman who is not a runner, or at least not near a professional level. That is a very good time.

Anyway, no big deal. I just thought it was a great time and run, as did Steve Cram and Brendan Foster.

She's actually an avid runner, takes it very seriously. She'd have to be, to run that time.

Yeah, I mentioned her because she's known. As for those older than Nell who finished quicker than her, wow, amazing. I'd like to know their history. Are they runners, were they always involved from an early age with running etc.

Any female in their 40s who breaks 3 hrs who is not elite, or who was never a pro athlete or a competitive runner is a very impressive result/time.

    Avid runner?

    What is that?

My point is that from my information, Nell was never a pro athlete or a competitive runner.

I am an avid runner too. I am male, younger than her, and I would not come close to that time. I just thought it was a great run. Again, no big deal. And 14 mins is a hell of a lot of an improvement, no?

I have to say I like Nell, she comes across like a really decent and nice person. 2:54 is a good run from her but 38 isnt exactly elderly. Carlos lopes was 37 when he won the olympic marathon in 1984. Gerry ryan whos 48 or 49 knocks out 50min 10mile races regularly. Our own joe cawley ran 2:36 yesterday and hes a bit older than 38. It was a good run from Nell mc andrew, but nothing extraordinary.

But she is a competitive runner and has been for years. I remember she finished very high up the female field in the great manchester run last year and finished ahead of several 'elites'

I am sure she runs very competitively with her club.

Ok, I didn't know as much as yourself. I never really recalled her being anything other than a model. Anyway, still a very good time for her

And, as you noted, finished ahead of sevberal elites in other races. That is fantastic. Bad for them if they are losing to a non elite.

I was impressed with er, and didn't expect so many replies almost downplaying the run. To me it is a hell of a run and a hell of an improvement

Surely, Kipsang knocking out a 14:09 in the 5th 5k to destroy one of the greatest fields in world marathon running history while still almost breaking the course record is more impressive?.

To put this in context: he won by two minutes and seven seconds versus probably the greatest marathon field in history.

Still think Nell mc Celebritys run was better?

I saw a picture on another forum of her picking up her number and posing for a photo with them and it didn't look like the championship numbers so I doubt she's in a club, or if she is then they are missing a trick.

    Edit: Yep, unattached

She releases fitness videos and makes money from them. It is part of her livelihood to be seen to be fit. Hence, she is in my book a pro athlete as she makes money, (indirectly I'll concede), from her performances i.e she is paid to train. 2:54 is well within a woman's reach with a lot of training but I am more impressed by someone who achieves such a time as well as holding down a full time job rather than as part of a full time job.

Great run by nell. Excluding the women's elite field she was 25th woman home. The majority of runners ahead of her were championship club athletes. Was a good run but is out of place in an elite thread :)

That too is excellent. It's not like I am saying what she did is impossible. I just thought it was excellent. If it's common place then I must not be all that up on things. Your friend's time at that age and under her circumstances is really something to be proud of.
